Description
Freezer doorways need freezer-grade strips: standard strip curtain PVC is only rated down to 0°C, while polar grade PVC is made to stay flexible down to -24°C. These polar grade strips are 300mm x 3mm, cut to the length you choose and punched along the top edge to bolt straight into the hinges on a heavy duty swivel hinge rail set for 56% or 80% overlap. Unbolt the worn strip, bolt the new one in, and the cold store is sealed again without taking the rail down. Choose smooth polar clear or polar ribbed, from 1 metre up to 4.5 metres (56%) or 5 metres (80%) long. The price shown is per strip and includes VAT.
Polar clear or polar ribbed?
Polar clear. Smooth clear freezer PVC with a faint blue tint, for the clearest view through the doorway. Suits pedestrian and pallet truck doors into walk-in freezers and cold stores.
Polar ribbed. The same freezer grade PVC with raised ribs running down each strip. The ribs give the strip extra strength, so it suits busier doorways with forklifts and reach trucks. The ribs streak the view a little more than smooth strips. Both types fit the same hinges, so match what is already on your rail.
Which overlap is my rail?
Swivel hinge rails are set up for one strip width and one overlap, so the holes in a new strip have to match. Count the slotted holes along the top of an old strip: on our strips, 2 holes means 56% overlap and 4 holes means 80% overlap. Choosing the length
Measure an old strip end to end. If it is damaged or stretched, measure from the bolt holes in the hinge to just above the floor. Lengths go up in 100mm steps. For an exact length, choose the next size up, then trim the bottom of the strip with a sharp knife against a straight edge. For a length outside this range, call us for a quote.

Fitting and safety
Undo the nuts on the hinge holding the worn strip and lift it away. Line up the punched holes in the new strip with the hinge plates, push the bolts through, and tighten the nuts and washers. Check it overlaps the strips either side as before. Strips are delivered rolled, so a slight curl at the bottom is normal. Unrolling them flat overnight in a warm room before fitting helps them hang straight. On a high rail, work from a safe platform such as a podium step or scissor lift, never from the forks of a truck, and follow your site's cold store working rules.
Keep the view clear. Replace strips that have gone cloudy, scratched or frosted over, so drivers and pedestrians can see each other through the curtain. Keep vehicle speeds low through strip curtains, and clean strips with warm soapy water only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use polar grade strips in a chiller?
We do not recommend it. Polar grade PVC is made for 0°C to -24°C, and above 0°C it can turn sticky. For chillers and normal rooms, choose our 300mm clear swivel hinge strips or ribbed swivel hinge strips.
Can I mix clear and ribbed strips on one rail?
Yes, if they are the same width and punched for the same overlap, they bolt into the same hinges.
Are bolts included?
No. The strip comes punched and ready to fit, and you re-use the nuts and bolts from the strip you are replacing.
My freezer strips are 400mm wide. Do you do those?
Not in polar grade swivel hinge strips at the moment. Call 01744 520 110 and we will check what we can supply.
My rail uses hook-on plates, not swivel hinges.
Then choose our hook-on polar grade strips or hook-on polar ribbed strips, which come with the plate fitted.
Why is there a minimum order?
Strips are cut and punched to order, so the minimum order is 10 strips. If you need fewer, call 01744 520 110.
