Description
A welding arc can give arc eye to anyone who glances at it, not just the welder. In a shared workshop that means passers-by, fitters and apprentices on the walkway are at risk every time someone strikes an arc. This welding PVC strip curtain closes off the welding bay so people outside are screened from the arc, sparks and spatter, while the bay stays open to walk through and the welder can still be seen. It is a complete hook-on kit, with a 430-grade stainless steel rail and 200mm x 2mm welding grade strips, cut to length and ready to hang. Choose Dark Green or Red, in 11 widths and 6 heights, from 856mm x 2000mm up to 2496mm x 2500mm.

Why it works
Welding grade PVC, not clear PVC. The strips are made to EN 1598 / ISO 25980, the standard for transparent welding curtains and screens. The tinted PVC filters the harmful ultraviolet and blue light from the arc, so people outside the bay are screened from it while they can still see that someone is welding inside.
Self-extinguishing, and stands up to spatter. The PVC is self-extinguishing and resistant to sparks and hot metal spatter, so it does not keep burning if a spark lands on it.
Walk straight through. Unlike a solid screen, the strips part for people, trolleys and work pieces and close behind them, so the bay stays protected without a door to open.
The overlap that closes the gaps. Each 200mm strip starts 164mm along from the last, so neighbouring strips overlap by 36mm on each side and 36% of every strip is doubled up. This is the recommended overlap for welding strip up to 2500mm high.
Strips you can swap one at a time. Every strip carries a stainless steel plate that hooks on to the rail. A strip that gets scorched or worn lifts off and a new one hooks on, without taking the curtain down. The PVC also acts as a secondary noise barrier.
Dark Green or Red?
| Colour | What it is like | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Green | The darker of the two tints. The arc shows as a muted green glow | You want a darker screen beside a busy walkway |
| Red | The lighter tint. The arc shows as an orange glow | You want a clearer view into the bay, for supervision and training |
Both colours are welding grade PVC to the same standard, at the same price.
Where it is used
Fixed welding bays in fabrication and engineering workshops, maintenance departments, automotive and agricultural repair shops, training colleges, production welding cells and assembly areas. For welding that moves around the workshop, our mobile welding screens stand on their own frames and need no fixing.

Choosing the right size
Width. Measure the width of the bay opening and choose a curtain a little wider, so the outer strips cover the edges and leave no gap for the arc to shine through. All sizes are nominal.
Height. Measure from where the rail will be fixed down to the floor. If you fall between two heights, go up one, because the strips trim with a sharp knife to finish just above the floor.
| Width | Strips | Typical opening |
|---|---|---|
| 856mm to 1184mm | 5 to 7 | Single doorways into a welding area |
| 1348mm to 1840mm | 8 to 11 | Single welding bays |
| 2004mm to 2496mm | 12 to 15 | Wide bays and welding cells |
Fitting and care
Fix the rail to a beam, lintel or other solid surface across the full width of the opening, because it is not self-supporting. Use M6 fixings to suit the surface, hook on each strip and check the overlap. Most people fit a kit themselves in 30 to 60 minutes. The strips travel rolled, so a slight curl at the bottom is normal; unroll them and leave them flat overnight before hanging.
Welding strip is a consumable. Strips near the work will scorch and wear over time, faster with heavy spatter, so check them regularly and replace any that are holed or heavily marked. Swap them one at a time with our hook-on welding replacement strips, cut to length with the plate fitted, in Dark Green or Red. Bulk welding PVC strip rolls are also available to cut your own.
Safety
The curtain screens people outside the welding bay. It does not replace the welder's own helmet, gloves and clothing, and it is not for looking at an arc directly. Keep flammable materials away from the work, as you would without a curtain, and follow your welding risk assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see through it?
Yes. Both colours are transparent, so you can see people and work inside the bay. Red is the lighter tint and easier to see through; Dark Green is darker.
Will sparks set it alight?
The PVC is self-extinguishing and resistant to sparks and spatter, so it does not carry on burning. Heavy spatter will still mark and hole strips over time, so replace them as they wear.
What is in the kit?
The stainless steel rail and the welding PVC strips, cut to your chosen height with plates fitted and ready to hang, plus fitting instructions. Rail fixings are not included because they depend on what you are fixing into. The rail takes M6 fixings.
Can I fit it to a ceiling or under a beam?
Yes. The rail can be face fixed to the wall above the opening or soffit fixed to the underside of a beam or lintel.
Can I use it outdoors?
It is made for indoor use from 0°C to +40°C. Outside, weather wears the PVC faster.
