Description
In a walk-in freezer, every second the door stands open lets warm, damp air in. It costs you twice: the plant works harder to pull the temperature back down, and the moisture freezes as frost on the evaporator, the floor and the stock. This clear PVC strip curtain hangs inside the doorway so the door can stay open while staff walk or wheel through, and the strips fall back to hold the cold in behind them. It is made from polar grade PVC, which stays flexible down to -24°C, where ordinary clear PVC goes stiff and cracks. It is a complete hook-on kit, with a 430-grade stainless steel rail and 200mm x 2mm strips cut to length with plates fitted, ready to hang. Choose from 11 widths and 6 heights, from 856mm x 2000mm up to 2496mm x 2500mm.

Why it works
Stays soft in the cold. Standard clear PVC is meant for rooms above freezing. Below 0°C it stiffens, so strips stop falling back into place and split where they are pushed aside. Polar grade PVC is made for sub-zero rooms and stays flexible and clear from 0°C down to -24°C.
Less frost, less work for the plant. Cold air is heavier than warm air and pours out at floor level the moment the door opens, while warm, moist air is drawn in at the top. Overlapping strips slow that exchange, so the freezer recovers faster during deliveries and picking, and less ice builds up on the evaporator and around the door.
Clear, so nobody walks into anyone. Staff in freezer gear carrying cases or pushing trolleys can see who is on the other side before they step through.
The overlap that seals the doorway. Each 200mm strip starts 164mm along from the last, so neighbours overlap by 36mm on each side and 36% of every strip is doubled up.
Hygienic hardware. The rail and plates are 430-grade stainless steel and wipe clean. Each strip hooks on and off, so you can take strips down to clean or replace a damaged one in seconds. The PVC is DOP free and REACH compliant.
Where it is used
Walk-in freezers in restaurants, hotels, pubs, schools and hospital kitchens, butchers and fishmongers, ice cream and frozen dessert makers, supermarket and convenience store back rooms, frozen food distribution and cold store warehouses, and frozen sample and pharmacy stores. For chillers and cold rooms that stay at 0°C or above, our cold room kit costs a little less.

Choosing the right size
Width. Measure between the inside edges of the door frame and choose a curtain a little wider, so the outer strips close against the frame. A typical 900mm freezer door takes the 1020mm curtain. All sizes are nominal.
Height. Measure from the underside of the frame to the floor. If you fall between two heights, go up one: the strips trim with a sharp knife, so they can finish just above the floor without freezing to it. Trim them before they go into the cold.
| Width | Strips | Typical door |
|---|---|---|
| 856mm to 1184mm | 5 to 7 | Single walk-in freezer doors |
| 1348mm to 1840mm | 8 to 11 | Wide and double freezer doors |
| 2004mm to 2496mm | 12 to 15 | Cold store and roll-cage doorways |

Fitting and care
Fix the rail to the panel or lintel above the door opening, across its full width, because the rail is not self-supporting. Use M6 fixings suited to the surface: for insulated panels, use panel fixings that will not crush the panel. Hook on each strip and check the overlap. The strips travel rolled, so a slight curl is normal, and in a freezer it takes much longer to relax. Unroll them and leave them flat overnight in a warm room before you hang them, or roll them the other way to take the curl out.
Wipe the strips down with warm soapy water as part of your cleaning schedule, away from the cold if you can. PVC strip is a consumable: busy doors and trolley knocks wear it faster. Replace any strip on its own with our hook-on freezer replacement strips, cut to length with the plate fitted.
Frequently asked questions
How cold can it go?
The polar grade PVC is rated from 0°C down to -24°C, which covers most walk-in freezers. For blast freezers and stores colder than -24°C, call us before you order.
Do I still need the freezer door?
Yes. The curtain cuts cold loss and frost while the door is open for deliveries and picking. Close the main door when the freezer is not in use, overnight and at weekends.
Can I use it in a chiller too?
We do not recommend it. Polar grade PVC has extra plasticiser to keep it soft in the cold, and in rooms above freezing that can make the strips feel sticky and harder to pass through. For chillers and cold rooms at 0°C or above, choose the cold room kit.
Can trolleys and pallet trucks go through?
People on foot and careful trolley use are fine. For regular pallet truck traffic, a heavier strip with more overlap will last longer: call 01744 520 110 with your door size and we will advise.
Is it food grade?
A food contact rating is not published for this line. It is widely used in food storage doorways, and the PVC is DOP free and REACH compliant. For areas where food is prepared, choose the food safe kit.
What is in the kit?
The stainless steel rail and the freezer grade strips, cut to your chosen height with plates fitted and ready to hang, plus fitting instructions. Fixings for the rail are not included because they depend on your wall or panel.
