Description
Metallic epoxy floor base coat: the first coat of a marble effect floor
If you are laying a metallic epoxy floor, this is the coat that goes down first. It seals and primes the prepared floor and gives the decorative resin a smooth, even surface to flow across. It is a two-part, 100% epoxy resin in white, grey or black, rolled over the whole floor like a paint, and it is Step 1 of the same three-step system as our metallic epoxy design coat and metallic floor top coat.
Flooring contractors, decorators and careful DIY installers use it in showrooms, bars, restaurants, shops and homes. The base coat shows through in places in the finished pattern, so it sets the tone of the whole floor.
Why it works
One coat does two jobs
This is a coloured epoxy primer. It seals the floor and establishes the background colour in the same application, so the design coat goes onto a sealed, consistent surface and not onto a bare floor.
The background colour changes the finished look
White suits lighter metallic schemes, while grey and black give a darker, richer result. If you are unsure, try a small test panel with your chosen pigment first.
Bond strength is published, not implied
The data sheet gives 3.9 N/mm² to concrete and over 12 N/mm² to steel. Those figures depend on preparation, so the surface work below matters more than any other step.
Works with underfloor heating
The base coat is compatible with underfloor heating.
Three-step metallic epoxy flooring system
Step 1: Metallic Epoxy Base Coat (this listing). Seals, primes and sets the background colour.
Step 2: Metallic Epoxy Design Coat. Clear two-part epoxy mixed with metallic pigment to create the colour and marble pattern.
Step 3: Metallic Top Coat. A clear protective finish, in water based or two-part UVR form, with a gloss, silk or matt sheen.
Each step is sold separately, and this listing is the base coat only.
Where it's used
It suits concrete and other stable, porous surfaces such as wood and plastic, provided the surface is perfectly smooth. It can also sit under other solid resin coatings, prepare a floor for a 3D finish, or prime a worktop. It is not for tiles or grout, and joints can show through, so screed first if needed. The design coat is an interior product, so treat the complete metallic system as an interior floor.

Choosing the right option
Colour: choose your pigment first, then white for lighter finishes, or grey or black for darker ones.
Size: multiply the room's length by its width and round up. Each size is the maximum area for one coat. Coverage varies with the surface and cannot be guaranteed.
| Size | Pack weight | Single coat coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5m² | 1.25kg | 4.25–5m² |
| Up to 10m² | 2.5kg | Up to 10m² |
| Up to 20m² | 5kg | Up to 20m² |
For a 30m² floor, order one Up to 20m² and one Up to 10m². Mix complete packs only, and on a very porous floor allow for a second coat.
Which base coat colour for your design colour?
The base coat shows through the marbling, so match it to the design coat. As a guide:
| Design coat colour | Base coat |
|---|---|
| Ice White, Pearl White, Beige, Yellow | White |
| Silver, Gold | White for a bright floor, grey for a deeper one |
| Copper, Bronze, Russet, Bright Red, Green, Blue | Grey or black |
| Violet / Purple, Dark Grey, Black | Black, or grey for a softer look |
Not sure? Lay a small test panel with your pigment over each base colour first.
The whole floor, priced
Every metallic floor needs all three steps. These are the totals for one coat of base coat, one coat of design coat in any of the 15 colours, and two coats of top coat, all inc VAT.
| Floor area | With water based top coat | With UVR top coat |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5m² | £459.67 | £575.67 |
| Up to 10m² | £901.68 | £1,127.68 |
| Up to 20m² | £1,518.59 | £1,774.59 |
Each total is 1 x base coat, 1 x design coat and 2 x top coat of the same size. Prices as listed in November 2026; the price shown next to each option is the one you pay. For a floor over 20m², call us and we will put the full list together for you.
Installation, use and care
Concrete must be clean and free of dust, laitance, grease, oil, curing compound and existing paint. Mechanical preparation, such as vacuum grit blasting or grinding, gives the best key; sanding or an etching cleaner such as our concrete etch and clean can be an alternative on bare concrete. Vacuum thoroughly afterwards. Steel should be blasted to a nominal Sa 2.5.
- Mix Part A alone with a drill-mounted paddle for about a minute.
- Add all of Part B and mix for about 90 seconds, keeping the paddle submerged, until the colour is uniform.
- Pour into a scuttle or onto the floor and start rolling at once with a nylon resin roller, cross-rolling to minimise marks.
- Cut in the edges with a brush. A second person helps on larger floors.
- Apply the design coat after at least 14 hours and no later than 24 hours. Past that window, sand gently with 200 grit paper to give a key.
It is not self-levelling. Use a new roller sleeve for each coat. Sanding between coats gives an extra-smooth result. White and lighter systems may show minor discolouration. Do not apply at 7°C or below, or on wet or uncured concrete.
Safety: irritating to skin and eyes, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and toxic to aquatic organisms with possible long-term effects. Wear gloves, suitable footwear and safety goggles. Read the safety data sheet before mixing; it is available on request.
Tools you will need
- A drill with a mixing paddle: our 80mm mixing paddle
- A 12 inch roller frame on an extendable pole
- Nylon resin roller sleeves, a new one for each coat: our epoxy resin roller sleeves
- A 4 inch mini roller or a 2 inch brush for cutting in at the edges
- A paint scuttle or tray: our 15 litre paint scuttle
- 200 grit sandpaper, in case a coat goes past its 24 hour window
- Gloves and safety goggles: our PPE safety pack has both
- For the design coat: spiked shoes to walk on the wet resin
Our paint application kit covers the basic rollers, brushes and mixing tools.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need this if I already have the design coat?
Yes. The design coat must go over the metallic base coat, never straight onto a bare floor.
Can I go over old floor paint?
Take it off first. The data sheet asks for concrete free of existing paint finishes.
How many coats do I need?
One coat covers most surfaces. A highly porous floor may need another. Apply it within the same 14 to 24 hour window, using a fresh pack and a new roller sleeve.
What comes in the pack?
Part A and Part B in two tins, measured to be mixed together in full. Do not split a pack into smaller batches, because it may not cure properly.
How much does a complete floor cost?
See the whole floor price table above. A floor of up to 10m² with a water based top coat comes to £901.68 inc VAT for all three steps.
