Description
Clear top coat for metallic epoxy floors: gloss, silk or matt
This is the coat that finishes a metallic epoxy floor. It goes over the marble pattern as a clear protective layer and decides the final sheen, and it is Step 3 of the same three-step system as our metallic epoxy base coat and metallic epoxy design coat.
There are two versions. The water based top coat is a low-odour, single-pack product that is simple to roll out and best suited to homes and lighter use. The UVR top coat is a two-part, solvent-free product that takes more care to apply and gives a tougher finish for busy commercial floors. Both come in gloss, silk or matt.
Why it works
It protects the pattern you worked to create
The top coat takes the scuffs and wear so the pattern underneath does not, and it leaves the floor easy to clean and maintain.
You choose the sheen separately from the colour
Gloss gives a deep, wet look. Silk softens reflections, and matt keeps the veins visible with very little shine.
Rated UV stable, with one sensible caution
Both data sheets rate this top coat as UV stable. The design coat beneath it is not, so still shade a metallic floor from prolonged direct sunlight.
Three-step metallic epoxy flooring system
Step 1: Metallic Epoxy Base Coat. Seals, primes and sets the background colour in white, grey or black.
Step 2: Metallic Epoxy Design Coat. Clear two-part epoxy mixed with metallic pigment to create the colour and marble pattern.
Step 3: Metallic Top Coat (this listing). The final protective layer.
Each step is sold separately, and this listing is the top coat only.
Where it's used
Choose water based for homes and low-traffic rooms. Choose UVR for bars, restaurants, showrooms, shops and anywhere with high foot traffic. The data sheets allow interior or exterior use of the top coat itself, but the design coat is an interior product, so treat the complete system as an interior floor. On concrete, the UVR data sheet requires a damp proof membrane and concrete at least 28 days old with moisture below 6%. No slip rating is published, so check the finish suits any area that gets wet.

Choosing the right option
Type: go water based for a lightly used floor and the simplest application. Go UVR for a commercial floor, if you are happy to mix two parts against a 20-minute pot life.
Size: each size is the area one pack covers in one coat, and two coats are recommended. A mixed UVR pack must be used in one application, so it cannot be split across coats. Order two of the size that covers your floor, one for each coat.
| Floor area | For two coats, order | Water based total | UVR total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 5m² | 2 x Up to 5m² | 1kg | 1.25kg |
| Up to 10m² | 2 x Up to 10m² | 2kg | 2.5kg |
| Up to 20m² | 2 x Up to 20m² | 4kg | 5kg |
| Up to 30m² | 2 x Up to 20m² + 2 x Up to 10m² | 6kg | 7.5kg |
The water based version is not mixed, so you can also use one larger can across both coats.
The whole floor, priced
Every metallic floor needs all three steps. These are the totals for one coat of base coat, one coat of design coat in any of the 15 colours, and two coats of top coat, all inc VAT.
| Floor area | With water based top coat | With UVR top coat |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5m² | £459.67 | £575.67 |
| Up to 10m² | £901.68 | £1,127.68 |
| Up to 20m² | £1,518.59 | £1,774.59 |
Each total is 1 x base coat, 1 x design coat and 2 x top coat of the same size. Prices as listed in November 2026; the price shown next to each option is the one you pay. For a floor over 20m², call us and we will put the full list together for you.
Installation, use and care
Apply over the design coat once it is no longer tacky and within 24 hours, because adhesion gets harder after that. If you miss the window, lightly sand with 200 grit or finer paper and vacuum thoroughly. The surface must be dry and free of dust, grease and cloth fibres.
Water based: bring the can to room temperature, ideally 20°C. Stir gently, because fast mixing adds bubbles, and decant into a tray. Roll out evenly and cut in the edges with a brush. Re-coat when no longer tacky. Avoid draughts: even a ceiling fan speeds up drying. Clean tools with water.
UVR: pour all of Part B into Part A and mix with a drill-mounted paddle until fully dispersed. Empty the tin within the 20-minute pot life. Apply with a polyurethane roller sleeve and cross-roll for an even finish.
Important: never wear spiked shoes for the second coat, because they can leave permanent dents. Before 24 hours the floor still marks easily. Avoid damp surfaces.
Safety: wear gloves and eye protection. Vapour from the water based product can irritate, so keep the room ventilated. Read the safety data sheet before use; it is available on request.
Tools you will need
- A drill with a mixing paddle
- A roller sleeve for each coat: suitable for polyurethane resins for UVR, such as our epoxy resin roller sleeves, or a standard sleeve for water based
- A brush for cutting in at the edges
- A paint scuttle or tray: our 15 litre paint scuttle
- 200 grit sandpaper, in case a coat goes past its 24 hour window
- Gloves and safety goggles
Our paint application kit covers the basic rollers, brushes and mixing tools.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the top coat?
No. A compatible top coat is a required part of the system.
Which type is more durable?
The UVR version, which has stronger chemical and wear resistance. The water based version is still impact and abrasion resistant for lighter use.
When can I mop the floor?
The water based version needs at least 48 hours and the UVR version 7 days. The design coat also needs 7 days before washing, so 7 days is the safe figure for the whole system.
What comes in the pack?
The water based top coat comes ready to use in one jerry can. The UVR top coat comes as Part A and Part B in two tins, to be mixed together in full and used in one go.
Do I really need two coats?
Yes, two coats are recommended for both versions, and each size covers one coat. For a 10m² floor, order 2 x Up to 10m².
