Description
An open loading bay is the biggest hole in any warehouse. All day long, heat pours out, wind and rain blow in, and dust, leaves and birds follow the trailers through the door. This heavy duty clear PVC strip curtain hangs in the opening so the roller shutter can stay up while forklifts, pallet trucks and people keep moving. It uses wide 400mm x 4mm strips, each one bolted into a galvanised steel swivel hinge on a heavy tube rail, a hanging system built for doors that take knocks from forklifts all day. Choose from 13 widths from 2920mm to 6280mm, 6 heights from 3000mm to 5000mm, and the rail bracket that suits your opening.
Why it works
Built for forklift traffic. Lighter hook-on and peg rails are made for pedestrian doors. Here every strip is bolted into its own galvanised swivel hinge with M8 bolts, so strips swing aside as a load pushes through and do not pull free from the rail.
Wide, heavy strips for big openings. Large loading bay openings catch more wind and take heavier traffic. 400mm wide, 4mm thick strips hang straighter and stand up to the weather better than narrow, thin strips, and they mean fewer joins across the door.
60% overlap. Each 400mm strip starts 280mm along from the last, so neighbours overlap by 120mm on each side and 60% of every strip is doubled up. That gives a tight barrier against draughts while vehicles still pass through smoothly.
Clear, so drivers can see. The standard clear PVC lets people and vehicles see what is coming the other way, and lets daylight into the warehouse.
Replace a strip, not the curtain. PVC strip wears with traffic. When one gets damaged, unbolt it and bolt a new one in; the rail stays up.
Where it is used
Warehouse loading bays and docks, goods in and goods out doors, distribution centres and logistics hubs, manufacturing plants, dispatch areas, HGV loading areas and other large doorways with forklift and pallet truck traffic. Choosing the right size
Width. Measure the clear width of the opening and choose a curtain wider than it, so the outer strips overlap the door frame on both sides. All sizes are nominal.
Height. Measure from where the rail will be fixed down to the floor. If you fall between two heights, go up one: the strips trim with a sharp knife so they finish just above the floor.

Fitting
The rail is heavy and holds the full weight of the curtain, so it must be fixed to a structurally sound surface, such as steelwork, concrete or masonry, with fixings suited to it. Fit the assembled rail, then bolt each pre-punched strip into its swivel hinge with the M8 nuts and bolts supplied. The strips travel rolled, so a slight curl at the bottom is normal; unroll them and leave them flat overnight somewhere warm before you hang them. If you are not sure your structure will carry the curtain, ask a competent installer.
Frequently asked questions
Does it replace my roller shutter?
No. It hangs inside the opening so the shutter can stay open while the bay is working. Close the shutter for security at night and at weekends.
Can forklifts drive through it?
Yes. It is designed for forklift, pallet truck and pedestrian traffic. Drive through at walking pace so the strips can part around the load. PVC strip is a consumable and wears faster at very busy doors.
Can I use it on a freezer or cold store?
No. The standard clear PVC is recommended for 0°C to +40°C and stiffens below freezing. For a walk-in freezer, see our freezer kit.
Can I buy replacement strips later?
Yes. Strips are pre-punched to bolt into the hinges, so a damaged one can be swapped on its own. Order our swivel hinge clear replacement strips, 400mm wide, cut to your length and punched to fit this rail.
