Description

An HGV parked at a loading bay weighs too much to rely on its brakes alone. As a forklift drives on and off the trailer, the whole vehicle can jolt and creep away from the dock, and that gap is where accidents happen. This solid yellow rubber chock sits under the tyre as a physical stop for vehicles up to 44 tonnes. It is yellow all the way through, so it is easy to see in a busy yard, and a moulded handle at the back lets one person carry it to the wheel. The price is for one chock.

Dimension drawing of the yellow wheel chock: approximately 280mm long, 186mm wide, 196mm high, with side and rear views

Why this chock works

Rated for the biggest vehicles on UK roads. Its 44-tonne maximum vehicle weight covers a fully loaded articulated lorry, so one chock suits your whole fleet, from rigid lorries up to artics.

A stepped ramp that follows the tyre. The concave face climbs in a row of rounded ribs that sit against the tread. If the wheel starts to roll, it bears down on the ramp and presses the chock into the ground.

A toothed base. The underside is cut into a row of small teeth rather than left flat, giving the rubber edges to bite with on concrete and tarmac.

Solid, with a handle built in. This is solid SBR rubber, not a cored part, and the block handle is moulded as one piece with the chock. There is no rope to fray, and at around 6kg it is still a one-hand carry.

No test standard or slope rating is published for this line. If your specification needs a tested chock, call us before you order.

Where it is used

Use it at loading bays and distribution centres, in freight depots and fleet yards, on tankers and trailers parked up for loading, and in workshops when a vehicle is stood for repair. Sites often keep a pair at each dock door, so the chocks are already there when the next trailer backs in.

How to use it safely

The ribbed ramp goes against the tyre and the handle faces away from it.

Guide showing the right and wrong way round to place a yellow HGV wheel chock, using a pair, and five steps for safe use
  1. Apply the parking brake, stop the engine and take the keys out.
  2. Push the toe under the tyre until the ramp is hard against the tread.
  3. On a slope, chock the downhill side first. Use a second chock on the other side of the tyre.
  4. Before removing the chocks, make sure nearby vehicle movements have stopped and everyone is clear.
  5. Take the chocks away before the vehicle moves, and never drive over one.

HSE guidance says chocks should be brightly coloured and large enough for a driver to notice, and that sites need a safe system of work, with drivers staying put until a designated person signals that it is safe to go. A chock backs up the parking brake and does not replace it.

Care

Check each chock before use and replace it if the rubber is split or the handle is damaged. Wipe off oil and grease, as these attack SBR rubber over time, and keep the base teeth clear of packed-in grit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one chock or a pair?

The price is for one chock. Set the quantity to 2 if you want one each side of the tyre, which is the usual choice for a trailer being loaded or parked on a slope.

Which way round does it go?

The thin toe goes under the tyre and the ribbed ramp sits against the tread. The flat back with the block handle faces away from the wheel, so you can reach the handle to pull it clear.

Will it fit under my trailer's tyres?

At about 196mm high and 186mm wide, it is sized for HGV tyres. Twin wheels are fine, as you chock the outer tyre. Check there is room beside the wheel to place it and pull it out by hand.

Does it need fixing down?

No. It is free-standing and moved by hand each time.

Is there a holder to keep it on the vehicle or a wall?

Yes. Our 245mm yellow steel holder fits this chock and is sold separately. Our narrower 230mm holder isn't listed for this size.
