S Scroll 70 x 190mm in 12 x 6mm Flat Bar, Raw Mild Steel for Gates and Railings

A tall, slim S scroll for narrow gaps. This scroll is one length of 12 x 6mm mild steel flat bar bent into an S about 70mm wide and 190mm tall, with a long straight stroke through the middle and a round curl at each end. Its narrow shape suits close-set bars, friezes under a top rail and small panels where a wider scroll will not fit. The price shown is for one scroll, with a minimum order of 10.

Why choose this scroll

Slim enough for close bars. At about 70mm wide it fits between bars set closer than most standard scrolls allow, so you can add scrollwork to railings and gates that keep their gaps small.

A long straight stroke. The straight middle section gives a clean diagonal line, which reads crisply in a row and lines up neatly under a rail.

12 x 6mm flat bar, bent the easy way. The bar is scrolled on its 6mm face, so the 12mm depth faces you and matches standard 12mm rails and bars for a flush weld.

Raw steel, ready for your finish. It comes as bare mild steel, so weld it in first, then prime and paint, or galvanise the finished panel.

Will it fit my gap?

For a scroll that touches the bar on each side, the clear gap between your bars should be about 70mm. That is bars at about 82mm centres with 12mm bar, or about 86mm centres with 16mm bar. In a frieze between two rails, set the rails about 190mm apart, inside to inside.

Scrolls are bent by hand, so sizes vary by a few millimetres. Lay a few out before you cut rails or set bar spacing, and trim the tips if one needs to sit a little tighter.

Is this the right scroll?

Fitting and care

Lay the panel out flat, set each scroll with both curls touching the bars or rails, and clamp it before you tack. Tack at each point of contact, check the row lines up by eye, then weld out and dress the welds.

Clean off mill scale and weld spatter, degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Work the paint into the curls with a small brush so no bare steel is left. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life outdoors.
