Description
A decorative baluster that turns a plain bar railing into a feature. This panel is a single 1000mm length of 12mm square mild steel bar with a forged centre: a bottle-shaped frame 160mm wide, closed top and bottom by curled C-scrolls, with a twisted basket on the bar inside it. Twisted bar runs above and below the frame, and the last 120mm at each end is left plain so you can cut it to height and weld it between your top and bottom rails. Set one in every three or four plain bars on a garden railing, balcony, gate or staircase. It comes in raw steel, ready to weld and finish. The price shown is for one panel, with a minimum order of 5.

Why fabricators use it
It is one piece of bar, not a kit. The frame, scrolls and basket are already fixed to the centre bar with forged collars, so there is nothing to assemble or line up. You treat it like any other 12mm square baluster: mark it, cut it, tack it and weld it.
The plain ends make it easy to fit. Each end has 120mm of straight, untwisted bar. That gives you room to trim the panel down for a lower railing and still land a clean square weld on a flat face, rather than on the twist.
It matches standard 12mm square bar. The bar size is the same as the plain balusters most railing and gate makers already stock, so the decorative panels sit in line with the rest of the run and weld to the same rails.
Mild steel takes any finish. Raw steel can be painted, powder coated or hot-dip galvanised, so the panel finishes exactly like the rest of the job.
Where it is used
Front garden railings on low walls, balcony and Juliet balcony infill, internal and external staircase balustrades, side and driveway gates, landing guards, fire escape screens, pub and shop frontages, and planters or garden screens where you want a run of plain bars broken up with a feature.

How many do you need?
Most railings use one decorative panel for every three or four plain bars. At 110mm bar centres, a one metre run holds about nine bars. As a guide:
| Railing run | Bars at 110mm centres | Panels, every 4th bar | Panels, every 3rd bar |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 metre | 9 | 2 | 3 |
| 2 metres | 18 | 5 | 6 |
| 3 metres | 27 | 7 | 9 |
| 5 metres | 45 | 11 | 15 |
Choosing the right panel
Pick the panel by the bar size of your railing first, then by the height you need. This one is 12mm square bar and 1000mm long, which suits railings and balustrades up to about 900mm between the rails once the plain ends are trimmed. For a busier look, or for a gate, compare these panels in the same bar size:
- 170 x 1000mm panel in 12mm square bar
- 220 x 1000mm panel in 12mm square bar for a wider feature
- 165 x 1000mm panel in 12mm twisted bar
- 170 x 900mm panel in 12mm twisted bar for lower railings

Stairs, landings and balconies in homes: the gaps in the guarding must not let a 100mm sphere pass. Keep your bar centres at 110mm or less. The 160mm frame then sits inside the run with narrower gaps beside it, so the panel does not open up the spacing.
Fitting and care
Measure the clear height between your rails and cut an equal amount off each plain end so the centre stays in the middle of the railing. Square the cut ends, tack the panel to the bottom rail, check it is plumb in both directions, tack the top, then weld out. Grind the welds flush. Raw steel will rust if left bare, so finish it the same day or keep it dry. Outdoors, have it hot-dip galvanised, or degrease, prime with a zinc-rich or etch primer and top coat with metal paint. Inspect painted railings each spring and touch up any chips straight away.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one panel?
Yes. The price is for one decorative baluster panel. The minimum order is 5, which covers a short run or a gate. For a full railing or a larger quantity, call us for a price.
Can I cut it shorter?
Yes. Trim the plain 120mm ends. Take the same amount off each end to keep the decoration central. Cutting into the twist works but the weld is neater on the plain bar.
Is it painted or galvanised?
No. It is supplied as raw mild steel so you can weld it first and finish it with the rest of the railing. It will show surface rust if it is stored outside unpainted.
Can it be used without welding?
It is made to be welded. You can drill the rails and pass the plain ends through, then fix them with a plug weld or a tight fit, but it is not a bolt-on part.
Is it the same on both faces?
Yes. The design is symmetrical front to back and top to bottom, so it can go in either way up.
