Description

The oval base flange stands a tube post up on a concrete floor, slab or deck, with no welding and no digging. The post pushes down into a closed socket, two grub screws lock it, and the oval plate is bolted to the ground through its two holes. It suits 42.4mm outside diameter tube, the usual size for handrails and pedestrian guard rails, and is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for outdoor use. It is the standard foot for surface-mounted key clamp barriers, guard rails and frames. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Dimension drawing of the 42.4mm key clamp oval base flange, 85mm tall on a 138 x 75mm plate with two 14mm holes at 100mm centres, with a table of all five sizes

Why use an oval base flange

Posts without concreting in. Bolting each post to the surface means no core drilling, no holes to dig and no waiting for concrete to cure. A run of barrier can go up and be in use the same day.

Strong in the direction that matters. The plate is longest across the two bolt holes. Fitted with that long side at 90° to the line of the rail, it resists the push of someone leaning on, or a trolley knocking into, the barrier.

Easy to move or replace. Undo two anchors and the whole post lifts away. A damaged post can be swapped by loosening two grub screws, without disturbing the plate.

Galvanised for outdoors. The zinc coating protects the iron in rain and frost, so the flange suits car parks, loading bays and footpaths as well as indoor floors.

Where it is used

Pedestrian guard rails along loading bay edges and walkways, car park and footpath barriers, warehouse and factory floor barriers, edge protection on flat roofs and mezzanines, bike shelter and trolley bay rails, stage and platform handrails, and free-standing tube frames, signs and workbenches.

What goes on top of the post

A two-rail guard rail on oval base flanges is usually finished with a 42.4mm short tee on each intermediate post, a 42.4mm three way top rail corner at each corner and a 42.4mm long tee where two lengths of rail meet over a post. Posts and rails are cut from 42.4mm galvanised tube.

How many do you need?

One oval base flange for every post. For a straight barrier with posts at 2 metre centres:

Straight run Posts at 2m Base flanges M12 anchors
4 metres 3 3 6
10 metres 6 6 12
20 metres 11 11 22

Choosing the right size

Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 42.4mm tube is often sold as 1¼" or 32mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this flange will not grip 40mm or 48.3mm tube. The same flange in other sizes and finishes:

Fitting and care

Set out the posts and mark each plate with its long side at 90° to the rail line. Drill the floor for M12 anchors to the anchor maker's depth, clear the dust, then fix the plate down firmly. Cut posts square, deburr them and push each one fully into its socket. Plumb the post and tighten both grub screws with a 5/16" hex key. Check the anchors and screws after the first week and once a year. Touch up any scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one fitting?

Yes. The price is for one oval base flange with both grub screws fitted. The minimum order is 5. For a full barrier or a larger quantity, call us for a price.

Are the floor fixings included?

No. The 14mm holes take M12 sleeve anchors into solid concrete, stone or brick, or M12 bolts through a timber or steel deck. Choose the anchor length for your floor.

Which way round should the plate go?

Put the long side of the plate, through both holes, at 90° to the line of the rails. That gives the most resistance to people leaning on the barrier.

Can I use it on a slope?

Only a level surface. The socket is fixed upright. On a ramp use the adjustable slope base flange or an angle base fixing.

Is a load rating published?

No load rating is published for this fitting. For a guard rail that must meet a set loading, ask a structural engineer to check the post spacing, anchors and floor.
