Description

The long tee carries a top rail over a post, and is the fitting to use where two lengths of rail meet. Its long barrel takes the rail straight through, or the ends of two rails pushed in from each side, and each is locked by its own grub screw; the post pushes up into the socket below with a third screw. It suits 42.4mm outside diameter tube, the most common size for handrails and guard rails, and is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for indoor and outdoor use. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Dimension drawing of the 42.4mm key clamp long tee, 60mm from the rail centre to the bottom of the socket and 120mm along the barrel, with a table of all five sizes

Why use a long tee

Joins rail lengths over a post. Tube comes in fixed lengths, so any run of rail longer than one tube has joints. The long tee's barrel takes two rail ends, each with its own screw, so the joint sits over a post where it is fully supported and cannot sag.

Three screws, more grip. Two screws on the barrel and one on the post socket hold the rail and post firmly, even where the rail is a single length through.

No welding, no threading. Everything goes together with a hex key. Rails can be built on site, adjusted and taken down again.

Galvanised for outdoors. The zinc coating protects the iron in rain and frost, for docks, ramps, walkways and yards.

Where it is used

Pedestrian guard rails along walkways and loading docks, handrails on ramps and landings, roof edge and plant platform rails, car park and yard barriers, and any 42.4mm tube rail long enough to need joints.

Long tee or short tee?

Use the long tee wherever two lengths of top rail meet over a post. Where the rail runs straight over a post in one length, the 42.4mm short tee does the job at lower cost. A short tee cannot join two rails inside it.

How many do you need?

One long tee at every post where two top rail lengths meet. With 6 metre tube and posts at 1.5 or 2 metres, a joint falls on every third or fourth post.

Choosing the right size

Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 42.4mm tube is often sold as 1¼" or 32mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this tee will not grip 40mm or 48.3mm tube. The same long tee in other sizes and finishes:

Fitting and care

Push the post fully into the socket. Cut rail ends square and deburr them, then push each rail into the barrel so the two ends meet in the middle. Level the rail and tighten all three grub screws with a 5/16" hex key. Check the screws after the first week and once a year. Touch up scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one fitting?

Yes. The price is for one long tee with all three grub screws. The minimum order is 5. For a full rail, call us for a price.

Can two rails be joined inside it?

Yes. That is what the long barrel is for: push one rail in from each side so the ends meet in the middle, each held by its own screw.

Can I use it on stairs?

Only on level rails, such as landings. The socket is fixed at 90°.

Is a load rating published?

No load rating is published for this fitting. For a guard rail that must meet a set load, ask a structural engineer to check the design.
