If you can't see the gate from where you work, you need to know when someone drives in. This wireless driveway alarm gives you that warning without running a cable across the yard. Three battery powered PIR motion sensors fix to posts, fences or walls around the site, and a receiver plugs into a standard 3-pin socket in your office, workshop or house. When a vehicle or person crosses a sensor's path, the receiver chimes indoors. It suits trade yards, farms, storage sites and long private drives. The kit includes all three sensors, one receiver and nine AA batteries.

Why this kit works

There is nothing to dig or wire. Each sensor runs on three AA batteries and signals the receiver by radio, so you need no trenching or power at the gate. Expect 9 to 12 months from a set of batteries, and the shorter end of that at a busy entrance.

The range covers most sites. The system is rated up to 400 metres line of sight. Buildings, hedges and steel cladding all shorten that, so plan on 200 to 400 metres in real conditions. A signal repeater, not included, can extend it.

You can tell which sensor went off. The receiver has 35 chimes and you can give each sensor its own, so the main gate, back gate and fuel tank each sound different. There are four volume levels.

Fewer false alerts from small animals. Each sensor detects movement up to 15 metres away through an elongated lens that helps avoid small ground animals, provided it is fitted at the right height. Two sensitivity settings suit different sites.

The system can grow. One receiver accepts up to 32 sensors, and there is no limit on extra receivers if you want to hear the alert in more than one room.

This is an alert system, not a monitored intruder alarm. The round lens is a motion detector, not a camera, so it records nothing. There is no outdoor siren and no phone notification in this kit. Larger animals such as deer or cattle can still set it off. The receiver runs from a mains socket and no battery backup is listed, so assume it will not chime in a power cut.

Fit it at the entrance to a builder's merchant or trade yard, on a farm track, around stables and outbuildings, beside diesel or heating oil tanks, at the rear of an industrial unit, or along a long private drive where you cannot hear a vehicle arrive.

Fitting and care

Choose a solid post or wall and fit each sensor 1.5 to 2 metres above the ground, aimed level, so that vehicles and people cross its detection zone. Test each location with the receiver plugged in before you fix anything. Fixing screws are not listed as part of the kit, so have some ready that suit your post or wall. Only the sensors are described as weatherproof, so keep the receiver indoors. Replace the batteries once a year, or sooner if alerts stop.
