Description
A large pressed steel maple leaf, 190mm tall and 195mm wide, to weld onto gates, scrollwork, railings and garden screens. Each leaf is pressed from 0.5mm mild steel sheet into a five-lobed maple shape with serrated edges, raised veins and a short stem. The thin sheet is light and easy to bend by hand, so you can curl the lobes to give the leaf movement before fixing. Each one weighs about 0.08 kg. The price shown is for one leaf, with a minimum order of 10.

Why choose this leaf
Big, clear shape. At almost 200mm across, the maple outline reads well from a distance on a gate or garden screen.
Raised veins. The pressed veins catch the light and look good picked out in a contrast colour, such as gold on black.
Shape it by hand. 0.5mm sheet bends easily, so each leaf can be given a slightly different curl for a natural look.
Low cost decoration. A quick way to add a hand-made finish to plain scrollwork.
Where it is used
Gate and railing scrollwork, garden screens and trellis panels, wall art and vine designs, garden arches and gazebos, and decorative fire screens and furniture.

Fitting and care
Shape the lobes first by hand or with round-nose pliers. Hold the leaf in place with a clamp and fix it by the stem: a light MIG or TIG tack, braze, or a rivet. Thin sheet burns through easily, so keep the heat low and short, and tack the stem rather than the leaf edge.
Degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. To pick out the veins, paint the leaf black and dry-brush gold or copper over the raised parts.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one leaf?
Yes, it is for one pressed steel maple leaf, with a minimum order of 10.
Can I weld 0.5mm sheet?
Yes, with care. Use a low setting and tack the stem, or braze it. Riveting through the stem also works well.
Can I bend it?
Yes. The thin sheet bends by hand, so you can curl the lobes and twist the stem to suit.
Is it painted?
No. It is raw steel and will rust if left bare, so prime and paint it once it is fixed.
