Description

A tall, smooth top with real presence and no point. This railhead is 150mm tall: a long teardrop body 44mm wide with a sunken panel on each face, a 20mm ball on top, and a round onion-shaped bulb foot 35mm across. It suits driveway gates, 25mm bar and taller railings where you want a strong finish without a spike. The price shown is for one railhead, with a minimum order of 10.

Dimension drawing of the large teardrop ball-top railhead: 150mm tall, 44mm wide, 20mm ball tip, bulb foot 35mm across and 20mm tall

Why choose this railhead

No sharp point. The body narrows to a round 20mm ball, so the top of the gate is smooth to the touch at any height.

Sized for heavier bar. At 150mm tall and 44mm wide, on a 35mm foot, it sits in proportion on 25mm bar and gate stiles, where a small head would look lost.

Sunken panel. A recessed teardrop panel runs down each face, catching shadow once painted and giving the plain outline some depth.

Bulb foot hides the weld. The round 35mm bulb sits on the cut end of the bar and gives a full ring to weld round. Ground and painted, it reads as a turned knob.

Where it is used

Driveway and estate gates, taller front railings, gate stiles and posts, school and nursery frontages, and railings beside paths where a rounded top is preferred.

Which bar does it suit?

Upright on your gate or railing How the 35mm foot sits
20mm square or round Foot overhangs about 7mm each side, a knob-on-a-bar look
25mm square or round Foot overhangs about 5mm each side, the usual choice
30mm square Foot overhangs about 2mm each side
40mm post or box section Weld a cap plate on first, then weld the foot to it

How many do you need?

You need one railhead for every bar that rises above the top rail, plus one for each post you want to top. Divide the run by your bar spacing and round up.

Run length At 120mm centres
1 metre gate 9 railheads
3 metre pair of driveway gates 26 railheads
2 metres of railing 17 railheads
5 metres of railing 42 railheads

On stairs, landings and balconies in homes, the gap between bars must not let a 100mm sphere pass through.

Fitting and care

Cut every bar to the same height, then grind the cut ends flat. Stand each railhead on its bar, turn it so every face points the same way, check it is upright from the front and the side, and tack it. Run a string line across the ball tips before welding out.

Blend the weld into the bulb with a flap disc, degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life on gates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one railhead?

Yes, it is for one railhead, with a minimum order of 10. For a larger run, call us for a quantity price.

Is it painted?

No. It is raw cast steel and will rust if left bare outdoors, so prime and paint it, or galvanise it, once it is welded on.

Is the ball part of the casting?

Yes. The 20mm ball is cast in one piece with the body.

Can I fit it on a hollow post?

Yes. Weld a flat cap plate over the open end first, then weld the bulb foot to the centre of the cap.

Are all the railheads exactly the same?

They are cast from the same pattern, but cast parts vary by a millimetre or two. Set them to a string line when fitting rather than measuring each one from the bar.
