Description

A solid cast spear bud post top on square base to finish the top of a post. It is a faceted spear bud on a ringed neck and a square pyramid foot, 90mm tall and 52mm at the widest, standing on a flat 52mm square base. Weld or bond it to the top of a post or gate pillar and it turns a plain steel post into a traditional finished one. The price shown is for one post top, with a minimum order of 5.

Dimension drawing of the spear bud post top on square base: 90mm tall, 52mm at the widest, 52mm square base

Why choose this post top

Solid casting, real weight. At 0.88 kg it is a solid piece of metal, not a hollow pressing, so it looks substantial and stands up to knocks.

Flat base, easy to fit. The 52mm square base sits flat on a capped post, so it welds on square with a tack at each side.

Classic detail. The faceted spear bud gives gates, railings and pillars the look of traditional ironwork.

Ready to paint. Supplied raw, so it takes the same primer and paint as the rest of the ironwork.

Where it is used

On gate posts, railing and fence posts, pillars and newel posts. The base suits 52 x 52mm square posts and box section.

One per post. Count the gate posts and every railing post that should carry a top, and remember the minimum order of 5.

Pick a base about the same width as your post, or a little smaller. A base wider than the post overhangs and looks heavy.

Fitting and care

Close the top of a hollow post first with a cap plate or pyramid top, so the post cannot fill with water. Centre the post top on it, tack weld at each side and then weld round the base, or bond it with a metal adhesive if you are not welding.

Wire brush off any surface rust and degrease, then prime with a metal primer and paint to match the rest of the ironwork. We do not recommend hot-dip galvanising this post top: some castings like it have blistered or cracked in the zinc bath. Use a zinc-rich primer outdoors instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one post top?

Yes, it is for one post top, with a minimum order of 5.

Does it slide into or over the post?

Neither. It has a flat base that sits on top of a capped post and is welded or bonded in place.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid cast metal, 0.88 kg each.

Why is there rust on it?

It is raw cast metal with no coating, so light surface rust can form in storage. It wire brushes off before priming and does not affect the casting.
