Description
The locking ring is a plain collar that clamps to a tube with one grub screw, to stop another fitting sliding down it or to carry a load. Slide it onto the tube, push it up tight under the fitting above, and tighten the screw. It is the simple fix for a shelf or rail that creeps down a post under weight, and the usual bearing collar under a heavy gate hinge. It suits 48.3mm outside diameter tube, the same size as scaffold tube, and is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for indoor and outdoor use. The price shown is for one ring, with a minimum order of 10.

Why use a locking ring
A second grip under a loaded fitting. Every key clamp holds by its grub screw biting into the tube. On racking, shelving and frames carrying heavy stock, that load can be more than one screw should hold. A locking ring clamped directly underneath takes the extra weight, so the fitting above cannot slip.
A bearing collar for gate hinges. On a tube gate post, the ring sits under the hinge and carries the gate's weight, while the hinge above turns freely on the post.
Stops fittings that are meant to turn from sliding. Swivels and hinge collars left loose to rotate can still drop down the tube; a ring under them keeps them at height.
Low cost and quick. One screw, no drilling, and it can be moved or added to a frame at any time, as long as you can slide it on from the tube end.
Where it is used
Tube storage racking and shelving, garment and display rails carrying heavy stock, gate posts on farms and yards, swing and play frames, machine and workbench frames, and as an end stop on a horizontal tube.

Choosing the right size
Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 48.3mm is standard scaffold tube, often sold as 1½" or 40mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this ring will not grip 42.4mm or 60.3mm tube. Other sizes of the same ring:
- 42.4mm locking ring for standard handrails
- 33.7mm locking ring
- 26.9mm locking ring
Fitting and care
Slide the ring onto the tube from its end before fitting anything that blocks it. Push it up hard against the underside of the fitting it supports, then tighten the grub screw firmly with a 5/16" hex key until it bites into the tube. Check it after loading the frame for the first time, after a week, and once a year after that. Touch up scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one ring?
Yes. The price is for one locking ring with its grub screw. The minimum order is 10. For a larger quantity, call us for a price.
Can it join two tubes?
No. It is a collar only; tubes cannot be joined inside it. Use a sleeve or straight joint for that.
Can I fit it without taking the frame apart?
Only if the tube end is free to slide it on. It is one closed ring and does not open.
Is a load rating published?
No load rating is published for this fitting. For racking or gates carrying heavy loads, ask a structural engineer to check the design.
