Description
A solid 40mm forged steel ball, a neat weld-on finial for railing bars, gate frames and metal furniture. This sphere is 40mm across, slightly smaller than a golf ball, forged from mild steel and solid all the way through, with a lightly textured forged surface and no hole. Weld it straight onto the end of a bar or small post for a rounded, finished top. Each ball weighs about 0.25 kg. The price shown is for one sphere, with a minimum order of 10.
Why choose this sphere
Neat and in proportion. A 40mm ball suits 12mm to 20mm bars and light gate frames without looking top-heavy.
Solid, not hollow. It will not dent or fill with water, and you can grind the weld smooth without breaking through a shell.
No sharp point. A ball top is kind to hands and clothing on garden gates, low railings, benches and play area fencing.
Light and easy to weld. At about 0.25 kg it tacks easily on a bar end with MIG, TIG or stick.
Where it is used
Railing and gate tops, corner uprights of gate frames, garden benches, chairs and tables, plant stands and trellis, fire guards and fire baskets, and craft and sculpture work.

Fitting and care
Cut the bars square and grind the ends clean. Hold the ball with a magnet or in a short length of angle as a jig, check it is centred from the front and the side, tack it in two places and weld round. On a run of railings, set a string line across the tops so every ball sits at the same height.
Degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life outdoors. Store the balls somewhere dry until you weld, as raw steel rusts quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one sphere?
Yes, it is for one 40mm sphere, with a minimum order of 10.
Is it solid or hollow?
Solid forged steel all the way through. A hollow 40mm sphere is also available.
Does it have a hole for the bar?
No. It is a plain ball that you weld on top. For a ball that fits over the bar, choose the 40mm sphere with a hole.
Is it perfectly smooth?
No. It has a forged surface with light texture. Paint hides most of it, or you can flap-disc it smoother before painting.
Is it painted?
No. It is raw steel and will rust if left bare outdoors, so prime and paint it, or galvanise it, once it is welded on.
