Description
A solid 50mm forged steel ball, the classic weld-on finial for posts, gates and railings. This sphere is 50mm across, about the size of a golf ball, forged from mild steel and solid all the way through, with a lightly textured forged surface and no hole. Weld it straight onto the top of a bar, a post cap or a newel to give a neat rounded finish. Each ball weighs about 0.51 kg. The price shown is for one sphere, with a minimum order of 10.
Why choose this sphere
Solid, not hollow. A forged solid ball will not dent, crush or fill with water, and you can grind the weld flush without breaking through a thin shell.
The right size for railings and gates. At 50mm it sits well on 16mm to 25mm bars, gate frames and small posts, and it is the most popular size for front garden railings.
Rounded, with no sharp point. A ball top is the safe choice beside paths, schools, play areas and anywhere people lean on the railing.

Fitting and care
Cut the bar or post square and grind the end clean. Hold the ball in place with a magnet or a short length of angle as a jig, check it is centred from the front and the side, then tack it in two places and weld round. On a railing, run a string line across the tops so every ball sits at the same height.
Degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life outdoors. Store the balls somewhere dry until you weld, as raw steel rusts quickly.

Is the price for one sphere?
Yes, it is for one 50mm sphere, with a minimum order of 10.
Is it solid or hollow?
Solid forged steel all the way through. A hollow 50mm sphere is also available if you need less weight.
Does it have a hole for the bar?
No. It is a plain ball that you weld on top of the bar. For a ball that slides over the bar, choose a sphere with a hole.
Is it perfectly smooth?
No. It has a forged surface with light texture. Paint hides most of it, or you can flap-disc it smoother before painting.
Is it painted?
No. It is raw steel and will rust if left bare outdoors, so prime and paint it, or galvanise it, once it is welded on.
