Description
No lintel over the opening, or nothing solid to fix a curtain rail to? Put a steel beam across the opening on a pair of heavy duty brackets, then hang the strip curtain from the beam. The cantilever bracket is a 400mm x 300mm gallows bracket welded from 50mm x 50mm x 6mm steel angle, which bolts flat to the wall either side of the opening and carries the beam on its arm. Where the only surfaces are the sides of columns or reveals, an RSJ bracket bolts to the side face and turns the fixing through 90 degrees, so the cantilever bracket faces the right way. Both are 6mm steel, supplied in a coat of primer ready to paint. The price shown is per bracket and includes VAT.

Which brackets do I need?
| What is either side of the opening? | Brackets | Price |
|---|---|---|
| A wall or frame face you can bolt to | 2 cantilever brackets | £351.80 |
| Only side faces, such as steel columns or door reveals | 2 RSJ brackets + 2 cantilever brackets | £703.60 |
Most beams need one cantilever bracket at each end. Very wide or heavy curtains may need a support part-way along: call 01744 520 110 with the width and height and we will advise.
The two brackets
Cantilever bracket, 400mm x 300mm. A gallows bracket with a back leg, a top arm and a diagonal brace, made from 50mm x 50mm x 6mm steel angle. It fits either way round: with the 300mm arm projecting forward and the 400mm leg on the wall, or the 400mm arm forward for more clearance in front of the wall. The fixing holes run down the back only, so it bolts flat to a face.
RSJ bracket, 200mm x 100mm x 300mm deep. A 90-degree steel angle with a central gusset for strength. One leg bolts to the side of a column or reveal; the other gives a 100mm or 200mm wide, 300mm deep face, depending on which way round it goes, for a cantilever bracket to bolt onto.
What else you need
A steel beam to span the opening, sized by a competent person for the span and the weight of the curtain. Fixings rated for the load and for the wall, frame or column you fix into. A curtain rail and strips to hang under the beam: for vehicle doors, a swivel hinge rail or an aluminium twin track rail; for pedestrian doors, a stainless or galvanised hook-on rail. None of these are included with the brackets.
Fitting
Mark the bracket positions level, either side of the opening and high enough that the beam, rail and strips clear the opening. Bolt each cantilever bracket through its back leg, or bolt an RSJ bracket to the side of each column first and the cantilever bracket to that. Lift the beam onto the arms and bolt it down, then fix the curtain rail under the beam and hang the strips. Work from a scaffold tower or MEWP, with two people for the beam.

Safety
These brackets carry a steel beam over a doorway used by people and vehicles. Have a competent person check the wall or column, choose the beam size and specify the fixings before you fit them. They are not a substitute for a structural lintel and must not carry building loads. Check for cables and pipes before drilling, and keep the area below clear while the beam is lifted.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need RSJ brackets as well?
Only if there is no face to bolt the cantilever bracket to. If the opening is between steel columns, or the only surfaces are the sides of the reveals, bolt an RSJ bracket to each side face and fix the cantilever bracket to it.
Are fixings or the beam included?
No. The beam and fixings depend on your span, curtain and building, so a competent person should specify them. We can advise on the rail and strips: call 01744 520 110.
Which way round should the cantilever bracket go?
With the 300mm arm forward for most doors. Turn it so the 400mm arm projects if you need the beam further from the wall, for example to clear a door frame, shutter box or pipework.
Can I paint them?
Yes. They are supplied primed, ready for a top coat to match your building or safety colours.
How many do I need?
Two cantilever brackets for most beams, one at each end. Add two RSJ brackets if you are fixing to the sides of columns or reveals.
