Why the Underlay is Critical
The included geotextile underlay provides essential protection:

- ✓ Protects from root growth pushing up from below
- ✓ Prevents ground movement damage from soil settling
- ✓ Extends liner life by eliminating abrasion
- ✓ Makes installation easier by creating a smooth base
Without underlay, even the best liner can fail. We include it FREE because it's essential for long-term success.
Which size do I need?
Measure the longest and widest points of the pond and its deepest point, then use this sum for each direction: liner size = pond size + (2 x deepest point) + 1m. Dig first and measure the hole rather than the plan. HDPE does not stretch, so for an irregular shape run a tape down one side, across the base and up the other. These examples use the sizes we list:
| Pond (length x width x depth) | Liner needed | Choose |
|---|---|---|
| 1m x 0.8m x 0.3m | 2.6m x 2.4m | 2.5m x 3m |
| 2m x 1m x 0.5m | 4m x 3m | 4m x 3m |
| 2.5m x 1.5m x 0.6m | 4.7m x 3.7m | 4m x 5m |
| 3m x 2m x 0.75m | 5.5m x 4.5m | 5m x 6m |
| 4m x 3m x 1m | 7m x 6m | 6m x 7m |
| 5m x 4m x 1m | 8m x 7m | 7m x 9m |
| 6m x 5m x 1.2m | 9.4m x 8.4m | 9m x 10m |
| 10m x 7m x 1.5m | 14m x 11m | 12m x 15m |
| 15m x 12m x 1.5m | 19m x 16m | 18m x 20m |
| 20m x 15m x 2m | 25m x 20m | 22m x 32m |
If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one.
Size finder: the largest pond each liner fits
Find your pond's depth, then look down that column for the first size that covers your pond's length and width. Every figure allows for the depth on both sides plus 1m of edge overlap. A dash means that liner is too small for that depth.
| Liner size | Pond 0.5m deep | Pond 1m deep | Pond 1.5m deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2m x 2m | – | – | – |
| 2.5m x 2.5m | 0.5m x 0.5m | – | – |

| 22m x 32m | 20m x 30m | 19m x 29m | 18m x 28m |
| 30m x 40m | 28m x 38m | 27m x 37m | 26m x 36m |
These figures assume a rectangular pond with straight sides. For shelves or an irregular shape, measure over the contours with a tape and use the sum above.
Choosing the right liner
We sell four pond liners. The main differences are the guarantee and what goes underneath:
| Liner | Guarantee | Underlay |
|---|---|---|
| This liner, HDPE with heavy-duty underlay | Lifetime | Free 80gsm heavy-duty underlay |
| Heavy Duty HDPE Pond Liner | 40 years | Free 54gsm underlay |
| Industrial-Grade HDPE Pond Liner | 25 years | Not included |
| Heavy-Duty PVC Pond Liner | Lifetime | Free geotextile underlay |
Choose this liner when the ground is stony or full of roots and you want the heavier underlay. At 80gsm it is the heavier of the two underlays supplied with our HDPE liners, compared with 54gsm on the 40-year liner. This liner is not suitable for a koi viewing window.
Fitting tips from the pond trade
- Clear the ground first. Heavy-duty underlay helps, but it does not replace removing stones, roots and anything sharp. The guarantee does not cover punctures or tears.
- Let the liner lie loose. It has no stretch, so never pull it tight into a corner. Form neat folds and let the weight of the water seat it.
- Pick a warm day. The sheet is easier to handle in the warmth, and larger sizes need two or more people.
- Fill slowly. Smooth the sides as the level rises and hold the overlap with smooth stones, not sharp ones.
- Finish the edge properly. Bury it in a trench or cover it with coping so soil cannot wick water out and the sun stays off the liner.
- Treat tap water for fish. Use a pond dechlorinator before you add fish.

Frequently Asked Questions – HDPE Pond Liner with Free Underlay
What is included with this pond liner?
Every order includes a heavy-duty HDPE pond liner AND a free protective underlay. The underlay is essential for protecting the liner from sharp stones, roots, and ground movement beneath your pond. Using both together significantly extends the lifespan of your installation and is considered best practice by professional landscapers and pond builders across the UK.
How is HDPE pond liner different from PVC pond liner?
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) pond liner is superior to standard PVC in several key ways: it is more UV-resistant (preventing brittleness and cracking from sunlight), more tear-resistant, more puncture-resistant, and far more durable over the long term. HDPE does not degrade or leach chemicals into pond water, making it the preferred choice for koi ponds, fish ponds, and any aquatic ecosystem. Our HDPE liner carries a lifetime guarantee compared to typical 5–10 years for budget PVC liners.
What size pond liner do I need for my pond?
Calculate your liner size using this formula: Length = Pond Length + (2 × Depth) + 1m; Width = Pond Width + (2 × Depth) + 1m. The extra 1m on each measurement allows for an overlap at the edges to anchor the liner securely. For example: a 4m × 3m pond with 1.2m depth requires a liner of approximately 7.4m × 6.4m. When in doubt, always order slightly larger — excess liner can be trimmed but a liner that's too small cannot be extended.
Can this liner be used for raised ponds or water features?
Yes — our HDPE pond liner is suitable for raised ponds, in-ground ponds, water features, bog gardens, and large decorative basins. Its flexibility allows it to conform to irregular shapes and contours. For raised ponds or containers, ensure the liner is properly supported at the edges and not under excessive tension, especially at corners.
Is express delivery available?
Yes — all pond liner orders are sent by express UK mainland delivery. Your liner and underlay are delivered on a roll for easy transportation and installation. Deliveries are made within 3–5 working days. For large commercial orders, please contact us for a delivery timescale and pallet quotation.
What underlay is included?
Each liner comes with free 80gsm black heavy-duty underlay. Lay it across the base and sides before the liner goes in, to reduce the risk of damage from stones and uneven ground.
What does the lifetime guarantee cover?
It covers damage caused by sunlight exposure. It does not cover punctures or tears, so clear the ground carefully and use the underlay. Keep your order confirmation as proof of purchase, and call us on 01744 520 110 if you have a question about a claim.
How thick is this liner?
This liner is 0.35mm thick. It is made for koi, wildlife and ornamental ponds on properly prepared ground with underlay beneath it. It is thinner than most rubber liners, which keeps it light and easy to fold into shape.
Can I fit a koi window?
No. This liner is suitable for koi ponds, but it should not be used with a koi viewing window.
Can it handle a deep pond?
A maximum depth is not published for this line. The ground carries the weight of the water rather than the liner, so firm, shaped sides matter more than the sheet itself. In deeper ponds, dig planting shelves or slope the sides, and remember that every extra 0.5m of depth adds 1m to the liner you need.
How many litres will my pond hold?
For a rough figure, multiply length x width x average depth in metres, then multiply by 1,000. A 4m x 3m pond with an average depth of 0.8m holds about 9,600 litres. Use this figure when you dose dechlorinator or choose a pump and filter.
