Description
The three way side outlet tee joins three rails to one upright at the same height, with the upright running straight through. Rails push into closed sockets to the left, the right and the front, making a T shape seen from above, and four grub screws lock everything in place. It is the fitting for the middle upright of a two-bay frame, where the back rail carries on and a dividing rail comes forward. It suits 42.4mm outside diameter tube and is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for indoor and outdoor use. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Why use a side outlet tee
Four tubes, one fitting. Without it, a middle upright with rails going three ways needs two or three separate fittings stacked at slightly different heights. The side outlet tee puts all three rails at exactly the same level, so shelves, roofs and decks sit flat.
The upright stays in one piece. The upright passes straight through the central barrel, so you can set the joint at any height on a full-length post and add more fittings above or below it.
No welding, no drilling. Everything goes together with a hex key. Frames can be built on site, altered later and taken down for storage or transport.
Galvanised malleable iron. The zinc coating suits outdoor stalls and play frames, and malleable iron bends before it cracks if the frame takes a knock.
Where it is used
Market stall and gazebo frames, exhibition and display stands, two-bay storage racks and shelving, workbench and machine frames, garden and allotment structures, play and climbing frames, and stage and event rigging made from tube.

How many do you need?
In a frame built in bays, you need one side outlet tee at each level of each middle upright along the back or front, where a dividing rail comes forward. A two-bay stall or rack with rails at two levels needs:
| Frame | Middle uprights | Rail levels | Side outlet tees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two bays, back middle upright only | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Two bays, back and front middle uprights | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| Three bays, back and front | 4 | 3 | 12 |
Choosing the right size
Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 42.4mm tube is often sold as 1¼" or 32mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this tee will not grip 40mm or 48.3mm tube. All four tubes must be the same size. Other sizes of the same fitting:
- 48.3mm side outlet tee for scaffold-size tube and heavier frames
- 33.7mm side outlet tee for light frames and display stands
Tubes cannot be joined inside the fitting: each rail ends in its own socket, and the upright must be one length through the barrel.
Fitting and care
Slide the tee onto the upright before fitting anything above it. Cut rail ends square, deburr them and push each one fully home in its socket. Square up the frame, set the height on the upright and tighten all four grub screws firmly with a 5/16" hex key until they bite into the tube. Check the screws after the first week and after the frame is moved, and once a year after that. Touch up scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one fitting?
Yes. The price is for one side outlet tee with all four grub screws fitted. The minimum order is 5. For a full frame or a larger quantity, call us for a price.
Does the upright have to pass right through?
The barrel is open at both ends, so the upright can carry on above. It can also stop flush with the top of the fitting if nothing goes above it.
Can I add the tee to a frame already built?
Only by sliding it over the end of the upright. To fit onto a standing upright, use a clamp-on fitting instead.
Is a load rating published?
No load rating is published for this fitting. For a frame that will carry people or heavy stock, ask a structural engineer to check the design.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. The galvanised finish is made for outdoor use, such as market stalls and play frames.
