Description

The yellow long tee carries a top rail over a post, and is the fitting to use where two lengths of rail meet. Its long barrel takes the rail straight through, or the ends of two rails pushed in from each side, and each is locked by its own grub screw; the post pushes up into the socket below with a third screw. It suits 42.4mm outside diameter tube and is malleable cast iron finished in gloss traffic yellow powder coat, RAL 1023, with brass-coated grub screws, for high-visibility safety rails indoors. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Dimension drawing of the yellow 42.4mm key clamp long tee, 60mm from the rail centre to the bottom of the socket and 120mm along the barrel, with three grub screws

Why use a long tee

Joins rail lengths over a post. Tube comes in fixed lengths, so a long run of guard rail has joints. The long tee's barrel is long enough to take two rail ends, each with its own screw, so the joint sits over a post where it is fully supported.

Seen from across the floor. Traffic yellow rails and fittings stand out against grey floors and racking, marking walkways, machine guards and edges for pedestrians and forklift drivers.

Three screws, more grip. Two screws on the barrel and one on the post socket hold the rail and post firmly, even where the rail is a single length through.

No hot work. Everything goes together with a hex key, in a working building, with no welding or damaged coating.

Where it is used

Warehouse walkway and pedestrian barrier rails, machine guards and battery charging areas, mezzanine and plant room guard rails, loading bay edge rails under cover, and yellow safety rails in factories, depots and car parks under cover.

Long tee or short tee?

Use the long tee wherever two lengths of top rail meet over a post. Where the rail runs straight over a post in one length, the yellow 42.4mm short tee does the job at lower cost. A short tee cannot join two rails inside it.

Which yellow 42.4mm fitting goes where

Joint Yellow 42.4mm fitting
Two rail lengths joined over a post This long tee
Top rail over an intermediate post Short tee
Top rail at an end post 90° elbow

How many do you need?

One long tee at every post where two top rail lengths meet. With 6 metre tube and posts at 2 metres, that is roughly one post in three.

Straight run Posts at 2m Rail joints (6m tube) Long tees
12 metres 7 1 1
24 metres 13 3 3
48 metres 25 7 7

Choosing the right size

Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 42.4mm tube is often sold as 1¼" or 32mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this tee will not grip 40mm or 48.3mm tube. Other sizes of the yellow long tee: 48.3mm and 33.7mm. For outdoor rails, the galvanised 42.4mm long tee; for black rails, the black 42.4mm long tee.

Indoors or outdoors?

Powder coat looks best and lasts longest indoors. The brass-coated grub screws are there for their finished look and will rust outside. If you do fit the tee outdoors, coat the threaded holes and grub screws with matching RAL 1023 yellow paint once tightened. For outdoor rails that need no upkeep, choose galvanised.

Fitting and care

Push the post fully into the socket. Cut rail ends square and deburr them, then push each rail into the barrel so the two ends meet in the middle. Level the rail and tighten all three grub screws with a 5/16" hex key. Touch up chips with RAL 1023 paint. Check the screws after the first week and once a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one fitting?

Yes. The price is for one long tee with all three grub screws. The minimum order is 5. For a full rail, call us for a price.

Can two rails be joined inside it?

Yes. That is what the long barrel is for: push one rail in from each side so the ends meet in the middle, and each is held by its own screw.

Can I use it on stairs?

Only on level rails, such as landings. The socket is fixed at 90°.

Is a load rating published?

No load rating is published for this fitting. For a guard rail that must meet a set load, ask a structural engineer to check the design.
