The variable angle joint turns a 33.7mm tube through any angle from 15° to 60°, so a rail can change direction without bending the tube. It is two closed sockets on a cast joint: set the angle, push a tube into each socket and lock each with its grub screw. The usual job is the bottom of a stair or ramp handrail, where the sloping rail meets the upright post, but it suits any frame where two tubes meet at an angle other than 90°. It is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for indoor and outdoor use. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Why use a variable angle joint

No pipe bender needed. Bending tube on site takes the right machine and often kinks or cracks the galvanising. This joint makes the same change of direction with two straight tubes.

One fitting, a wide range of angles. Anything from a gentle 15° bend to a sharp 60° bend, so it suits most stair, step and ramp pitches without ordering to an exact angle.

A neat, closed joint. Both tube ends finish inside the fitting, with no open ends or sharp edges at the bend.

Know its limits

Both sockets are closed, so neither tube passes through. Below 15° use a straight joint, and for a square corner use a 90° elbow. No load rating is published, so for a handrail that must meet a set load, ask a structural engineer to check the design.

How many do you need?

One at each change of direction. A step handrail running down to a post at the bottom needs one there; if the rail also turns level at the top, add another at the top post.

Choosing the right size

Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 33.7mm tube is often sold as 1" or 25mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this joint will not grip 32mm or 42.4mm tube. For standard 42.4mm handrails, use the 42.4mm variable angle joint.

Fitting and care

Push the post and the rail fully into the two sockets, set the joint to the angle of the rail, then tighten both grub screws firmly with a 1/4" hex key. Check the screws after the first week and once a year, and touch up scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.
