Application Guide

  1. Surface Preparation - Galvanised Steel: New galvanising: Degrease with white spirit or T-Wash. Allow to weather 6-12 months for optimal adhesion, or apply directly after degreasing. Weathered galvanising: Remove loose zinc, rust blooms, and contaminants. No primer required.
  2. Surface Preparation - Ferrous Metals: Remove all rust, mill scale, and loose paint. Abrade to bright metal or sound substrate. Apply directly to clean, dry steel – no primer needed for most applications.
  3. Surface Preparation - Previously Painted: Remove flaking paint. Abrade glossy surfaces with 120-grit paper. Clean thoroughly. Ensure compatibility by testing small area first.
  4. Mixing: Stir thoroughly for 3-4 minutes before use and periodically during application. High build formulation requires thorough mixing. Do not thin for brush/roller – thin up to 10% with xylene for spray only.
  5. Application Method: Brush: Use stiff synthetic bristle brush. Apply generous, even coats. Roller: 12mm medium-pile roller for smooth surfaces. Spray: Airless 0.017-0.021" tip, 2500-3000 PSI. Conventional spray not recommended due to high viscosity.
  6. Coat Application: Apply 2 coats for optimal protection. First coat seals and primes. Second coat provides full colour and weather protection. Maintain wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  7. Drying & Curing: Touch-dry 1-2 hours. Recoat after 4-6 hours (maximum 48 hours for inter-coat adhesion). Avoid heavy use for 24 hours. Full chemical resistance after 7 days.

Suitable Substrates

✓ Galvanised Steel: Hot-dip galvanised, electro-galvanised, zinc-coated sheet (new or weathered)
✓ Ferrous Metals: Mild steel, cast iron, wrought iron (clean, rust-free)
✓ Non-Ferrous Metals: Aluminium (keyed), zinc, lead (after degreasing)
✓ Previously Painted: Sound existing paint systems (after preparation)

Typical Applications

  • Agricultural buildings, barns, livestock housing, and farm structures
  • Industrial cladding, roofing sheets, and corrugated metal panels
  • Gates, railings, fencing, and perimeter security barriers
  • Structural steelwork, RSJs, purlins, and framework
  • Storage tanks, silos, and bulk containers (non-immersion)
  • Garden furniture, planters, and outdoor metalwork
  • Machinery housings, equipment guards, and protective covers
  • Guttering, downpipes, and rainwater systems
  • Shipping containers and portable buildings

Coverage & Pack Size Guide

Surface Area 5L Coverage Application
25 m² 2 coats (recommended) Small gate or fence section
50 m² 1 coat Large gate or cladding panel
15 m² 3 coats (heavy duty) High-exposure or corroded surfaces

Coverage varies with substrate texture and porosity. Corrugated or profiled surfaces reduce coverage by 30-50%. Porous or rusty surfaces require additional material.

Performance & Compliance

Weather Resistance: Tested to BS 3900 for exterior durability. Withstands 1000+ hours salt spray (ASTM B117) on galvanised substrates without blistering.

Adhesion to Galvanised: Exceeds BS EN ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion test (classification 0-1) on degreased galvanised steel.

Flexibility: Passes mandrel bend test (BS 3900-E1) demonstrating excellent flexibility for metal substrates subject to thermal movement.

VOC Compliance: Meets EU Directive 2004/42/EC category A/c (one-pack performance coatings).

Agricultural Use: Resistant to common agricultural chemicals including fertilizers, silage effluent, and livestock waste products.

Why No Primer Required?

This vinyl paint contains specialized zinc-reactive resins that chemically bond to galvanised surfaces, eliminating the need for etch primers or pre-treatment chemicals. The high-build formulation provides both priming and finishing properties in a single product, reducing labour time and material costs by up to 40% compared to traditional primer + topcoat systems.

Cost Savings: One product replaces two (primer + topcoat). Reduces application time from 2 days to 1 day on most projects.

Available Colours

This product is available in Brown (RAL 8017 equivalent) – a popular choice for agricultural buildings, fencing, and structures requiring a natural, low-visibility finish that blends with rural environments.

Other colours available: Contact us for availability in Light Grey, Mid Grey, Dark Grey, Black, White, Green, and custom colour matching (minimum order quantities apply).

Storage, Handling & Safety

Storage: Store in cool, dry conditions between +5°C and +25°C. Keep container tightly sealed. Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Stir thoroughly before use – high-build formulation may settle during storage.

Safety: Flammable liquid and vapour. Use in well-ventilated areas. Avoid skin and eye contact. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection in confined spaces). Keep away from ignition sources. Safety data sheet available on request.

Thinning: If thinning required for spray application, use xylene thinners only (max 10%). Do not use white spirit or other solvents – may affect adhesion and durability.

Disposal: Dispose of waste in accordance with local environmental regulations. Do not pour down drains. Empty containers can be recycled after drying.

Warranty & Delivery

Performance Guarantee: 7-year exterior durability on properly prepared galvanised steel substrates when applied in accordance with technical guidelines. 5-year guarantee on ferrous metals.

UK Delivery: Free standard delivery on orders over £100. Next-day and timed delivery options available. Hazardous goods shipping applies (UN1263 – flammable liquid).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really apply this directly to new galvanised steel without primer?
Yes. The vinyl resin formulation is specifically designed to bond to zinc-coated surfaces. For best results on shiny new galvanising, degrease with white spirit or T-Wash and allow to dry. The paint will achieve excellent adhesion without etch primer. For critical applications, allow new galvanising to weather 6-12 months before painting.
Will this paint stop rust on old steel?
The paint provides excellent barrier protection against moisture and oxygen, preventing new rust formation. However, existing rust must be removed before application. For heavily corroded steel, consider using a rust converter or red oxide primer before topcoating for maximum protection.
How does this compare to standard metal paint?
This is a high-build vinyl system with significantly better adhesion to galvanised surfaces, higher film thickness (80-100 microns vs 30-40 microns), superior flexibility, and no primer requirement. Standard metal paints typically require etch primer on galvanised steel and provide thinner, less durable coatings.
Can I use this on corrugated roofing sheets?
Yes, it's ideal for corrugated and profiled metal roofing. The non-drip formulation prevents runs on vertical and angled surfaces. Note that corrugated profiles require 30-50% more paint than flat surfaces due to increased surface area. Use a brush or roller for best results on profiled surfaces.
What's the best way to apply this on large agricultural buildings?
For large areas, airless spray is most efficient (0.017-0.021" tip, 2500-3000 PSI). Thin up to 10% with xylene thinners if required. For smaller projects or touch-ups, brush or roller application works well. Always apply 2 coats for optimal protection on agricultural buildings exposed to harsh conditions.
Will this paint fade in sunlight?
The vinyl resin contains UV-resistant pigments that maintain colour stability for 5-7 years in typical UK conditions. Some fading may occur in extreme sun exposure (south-facing surfaces), but the protective properties remain intact. Brown and earth tones show less visible fading than bright colours.
Can I apply this in winter?
Yes, down to +5°C substrate and ambient temperature. Below 10°C, drying times will be extended significantly – expect 3-4 hours touch-dry and 8-12 hours recoat time. Do not apply if frost is forecast within 24 hours or if substrate is damp or frozen.
