Application Guide
- Surface Preparation - Galvanised Steel: New galvanising: Degrease with white spirit or T-Wash. Allow to weather 6-12 months for optimal adhesion, or apply directly after degreasing. Weathered galvanising: Remove loose zinc, rust blooms, and contaminants. No primer required.
- Surface Preparation - Ferrous Metals: Remove all rust, mill scale, and loose paint. Abrade to bright metal or sound substrate. Apply directly to clean, dry steel – no primer needed for most applications.
- Surface Preparation - Previously Painted: Remove flaking paint. Abrade glossy surfaces with 120-grit paper. Clean thoroughly. Ensure compatibility by testing small area first.
- Mixing: Stir thoroughly for 3-4 minutes before use and periodically during application. High build formulation requires thorough mixing. Do not thin for brush/roller – thin up to 10% with xylene for spray only.
- Application Method: Brush: Use stiff synthetic bristle brush. Apply generous, even coats. Roller: 12mm medium-pile roller for smooth surfaces. Spray: Airless 0.017-0.021" tip, 2500-3000 PSI. Conventional spray not recommended due to high viscosity.
- Coat Application: Apply 2 coats for optimal protection. First coat seals and primes. Second coat provides full colour and weather protection. Maintain wet edge to avoid lap marks.
- Drying & Curing: Touch-dry 1-2 hours. Recoat after 4-6 hours (maximum 48 hours for inter-coat adhesion). Avoid heavy use for 24 hours. Full chemical resistance after 7 days.
Suitable Substrates
Typical Applications
- Commercial and industrial building cladding and facades
- Architectural metalwork, balustrades, and handrails
- Security gates, railings, fencing, and perimeter barriers
- Structural steelwork, RSJs, purlins, and framework
- Warehouse and factory external metalwork
- Car parks, loading bays, and commercial infrastructure
- Agricultural buildings requiring modern aesthetic finish
- Retail and office building exterior metalwork
- Storage units, containers, and portable buildings
- Guttering, downpipes, and rainwater systems
Coverage & Pack Size Guide
| Surface Area | 5L Coverage | Application |
|---|---|---|
| 25 m² | 2 coats (recommended) | Medium gate or railing section |
| 50 m² | 1 coat | Large cladding panel or facade |
| 15 m² | 3 coats (heavy duty) | High-exposure or corroded surfaces |
Coverage varies with substrate texture and porosity. Corrugated or profiled surfaces reduce coverage by 30-50%. Porous or rusty surfaces require additional material.
Performance & Compliance
Weather Resistance: Tested to BS 3900 for exterior durability. Withstands 1000+ hours salt spray (ASTM B117) on galvanised substrates without blistering.
Adhesion to Galvanised: Exceeds BS EN ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion test (classification 0-1) on degreased galvanised steel.
Flexibility: Passes mandrel bend test (BS 3900-E1) demonstrating excellent flexibility for metal substrates subject to thermal movement.
UV Resistance: Graphite grey pigments provide excellent UV stability with minimal fading over 7+ years exterior exposure.
VOC Compliance: Meets EU Directive 2004/42/EC category A/c (one-pack performance coatings).
Why Choose Graphite Grey?
Graphite grey (RAL 7024) is the most popular contemporary colour for commercial and industrial metalwork. It offers:
- Professional Aesthetic: Modern, neutral tone suits corporate, retail, and industrial environments
- Low Maintenance: Hides dirt, dust, and weathering better than lighter colours
- Excellent UV Stability: Grey pigments resist fading significantly better than bright colours
- Versatile Coordination: Complements most architectural colour schemes and building materials
- Timeless Appeal: Won't date like trend-driven colours – maintains professional appearance for years
Why No Primer Required?
This vinyl paint contains specialised zinc-reactive resins that chemically bond to galvanised surfaces, eliminating the need for etch primers or pre-treatment chemicals. The high-build formulation provides both priming and finishing properties in a single product, reducing labour time and material costs by up to 40% compared to traditional primer + topcoat systems.
Cost Savings: One product replaces two (primer + topcoat). Reduces application time from 2 days to 1 day on most projects.
Storage, Handling & Safety
Storage: Store in cool, dry conditions between +5°C and +25°C. Keep container tightly sealed. Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Stir thoroughly before use – high-build formulation may settle during storage.
Safety: Flammable liquid and vapour. Use in well-ventilated areas. Avoid skin and eye contact. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection in confined spaces). Keep away from ignition sources. Safety data sheet available on request.
Thinning: If thinning required for spray application, use xylene thinners only (max 10%). Do not use white spirit or other solvents – may affect adhesion and durability.
Disposal: Dispose of waste in accordance with local environmental regulations. Do not pour down drains. Empty containers can be recycled after drying.
Warranty & Delivery
Performance Guarantee: 7-year exterior durability on properly prepared galvanised steel substrates when applied in accordance with technical guidelines. 5-year guarantee on ferrous metals.
UK Delivery: Free standard delivery on orders over £100. Next-day and timed delivery options available. Hazardous goods shipping applies (UN1263 – flammable liquid).

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I apply this directly to new galvanised steel without primer?
- Yes. The vinyl resin formulation is specifically designed to bond to zinc-coated surfaces. For best results on shiny new galvanising, degrease with white spirit or T-Wash and allow to dry. The paint will achieve excellent adhesion without etch primer. For critical applications, allow new galvanising to weather 6-12 months before painting.
- How does graphite grey compare to other grey shades?
- Graphite grey (RAL 7024) is a medium-dark grey with slight warm undertones. It's darker than light/mid grey but lighter than anthracite or charcoal. This makes it ideal for hiding dirt while maintaining a professional, modern appearance. It's the most popular grey for commercial and industrial applications.
- Will this paint stop rust on old steel?
- The paint provides excellent barrier protection against moisture and oxygen, preventing new rust formation. However, existing rust must be removed before application. For heavily corroded steel, consider using a rust converter or red oxide primer before topcoating for maximum protection.
- Can I use this on commercial building facades?
- Yes, it's ideal for commercial cladding, architectural metalwork, and building facades. The graphite grey colour provides a contemporary, professional finish that suits corporate and retail environments. The semi-matt finish reduces glare and maintains a sophisticated appearance.
- How does this compare to powder coating?
- This paint offers similar durability to powder coating at a fraction of the cost and without requiring specialist equipment or off-site processing. It can be applied on-site to large structures that cannot be powder coated. While powder coating may offer slightly better abrasion resistance, this vinyl paint provides excellent weather protection and is much easier to touch up or recoat.
- Will the colour fade in sunlight?
- Grey pigments have excellent UV stability. Graphite grey will maintain its colour for 7+ years in typical UK conditions with minimal fading. This is significantly better than bright colours (reds, blues, yellows) which can fade noticeably within 3-5 years.
- Can I apply this in winter?
- Yes, down to +5°C substrate and ambient temperature. Below 10°C, drying times will be extended significantly – expect 3-4 hours touch-dry and 8-12 hours recoat time. Do not apply if frost is forecast within 24 hours or if substrate is damp or frozen.
- Is this suitable for coastal areas?
- Yes. The paint has been salt-spray tested (1000+ hours ASTM B117) and is suitable for coastal and marine environments. Ensure proper surface preparation and apply 2 coats for maximum protection in severe exposure conditions.
