Description
Black tarmac paint for faded driveways, paths and car parks
If your driveway, car park or private road has faded to a tired grey but is still sound, you may not need to resurface it. This water-based tarmac paint brings back a deep matt black in two coats, applied by brush or roller. It suits homeowners doing a weekend job, and contractors, landlords and facilities teams looking after bigger areas. There is nothing to mix, each 10kg covers 70–80m² per coat, and it evens out stains and the join between new and old tarmac.
Why it works
It restores the surface instead of burying it
Tarmac fades as it weathers and loses its resins. This resin-based coating replaces lost colour and seals the surface, helping it resist staining, discolouring and UV. Thick bitumen coatings from DIY stores tend to sit on top of the surface. This one is applied in thin coats, so it keeps the texture of your tarmac.
It looks like new tarmac, not paint
The matt finish is made to match freshly laid tarmac, so the result does not look painted or glossy. Repairs and newer patches blend into one even colour.
You can be back on it the next day
It is touch dry in about two hours and ready for a second coat in 4–6 hours. Cars can go on 18–24 hours after the last coat at 20°C, which also makes it practical to do a working car park in sections.
It is easy to work with
Being water-based, it is low in VOCs and odour, and tools wash out in warm, soapy water. Any leftover paint can be resealed in its container.
- Deep matt black finish that keeps the surface texture
- One-pack, water-based and made in the UK
- Two coats, by brush or roller
- Back in use within 18–24 hours at 20°C
Where it's used
Use it on tarmac and asphalt outdoors: house driveways, paths, car parks, private and estate roads, forecourts and courtyards. It also works for patching up small areas of road and for blending new repairs into old surfaces. It is not made for indoor floors. For concrete drives, choose our matt black concrete driveway paint. Coated car parks will usually need their bays re-marking, so see our line marking paint and ask us to confirm it suits your job.

Choosing the right pack
Multiply the length by the width to get your area in m², then use the table below. It allows for two coats at 7m²/kg, the cautious end of the coverage range. Old, open or very porous tarmac absorbs more, so allow extra on a badly weathered surface. The 20kg pack costs less per kilo, so it is usually the better buy once your job needs more than 10kg.
| Area | Paint for 2 coats | Packs to order |
|---|---|---|
| 20m² | 5.7kg | 1 x 10kg |
| 40m² | 11.4kg | 1 x 20kg |
| 70m² | 20kg | 1 x 20kg |
| 100m² | 28.6kg | 1 x 20kg + 1 x 10kg |
| 150m² | 42.9kg | 2 x 20kg + 1 x 10kg |
| 250m² | 71.4kg | 4 x 20kg |
| 500m² | 142.9kg | 7 x 20kg + 1 x 10kg |
Application and care
- Prepare: remove loose material with a wire brush, clean off dust, oil and grease, and let the surface dry fully. Repair damage and cracks first.
- Check the weather: it should be at least 7°C and dry, with no rain due for 24 hours. Avoid damp or humid conditions.
- Apply: stir well and cross-roll in thin, even coats, starting in a corner. If you are using several packs, mix them together in a scuttle for an even colour.
- Re-coat: apply the second coat after 4–6 hours, once touch dry. Allow longer below 20°C.
Wear gloves and safety goggles. Do not wash the surface or expose it to chemicals for 7 days, and keep it free of contamination after application. Our paint application kit includes the tools you need.
Frequently asked questions
Will it fill cracks and potholes?
No. It restores colour and seals the surface, but it does not repair it. Make good any cracks or holes with mortar or a suitable repair product before you start, or they will still show through the finished coat.
Can I use it on permeable asphalt?
Yes, but excess paint can drain through a permeable surface. Apply thin coats and expect to use more than the standard coverage figures suggest.
How long will it last?
No service-life figure is published for this coating. It depends on the condition of the tarmac, how well it is prepared and how much traffic it carries. Two coats on a clean, dry, sound surface give it the best start.
Can I apply it in cold weather?
Only at 7°C or above, and never in frost, on a wet surface or in damp conditions. Below 20°C, drying and curing take longer, so leave extra time between coats and before driving on it.
