Description

This square clamp holds a glass panel to the side of a 48.3mm round steel post, ready for you to powder coat to match your posts and handrail. It is cast zinc alloy in a raw, uncoated finish, 45 x 45 x 27mm, with a back curved to suit 48.3mm tube and rubber pads for 8mm and 10mm glass. Two countersunk screws close the two halves round the glass edge, so the glass needs no holes. The price shown is for one clamp, with a minimum order of 8, enough for two panels.

Why use this clamp

Made to be coated. The raw zinc body takes powder coat or paint well, so the clamps can go through the same coating run as your steel posts and rails and finish in exactly the same colour: anthracite, black, white or any RAL shade. That is far neater than stainless clamps on painted steel.

Shaped to the post. The back is curved to 48.3mm, the heavier post used on commercial stairs and wider spans, so the clamp sits tight on the tube with no rocking and no gap to collect dirt. A clamp made for the post size is what keeps the glass straight from post to post.

Rubber all round the glass. Glass never touches metal. The pads spread the load along the edge and take up small differences in glass thickness, which protects toughened glass from point loads at the clamp.

Lower cost per panel. Zinc costs less than stainless, which adds up on long runs of mezzanine, stair and landing balustrade where every panel needs four clamps.

Where it is used

Painted or powder-coated steel balustrades on stairs, landings and mezzanine floors in offices, shops, workshops and homes; glass infill panels in coloured handrails; and glass screens between round steel posts indoors.

How many do you need?

Most panels are held by four clamps, two on each post, set about 150 to 200mm in from the top and bottom of the glass. A run of three panels between four posts takes 12. A tall or wide panel may need a third clamp each side; follow your glass supplier's or designer's layout.

Choosing the right option

Measure across the post: 48.3mm tube is often sold as 1 1/2" nominal bore. If it measures 42.4mm, use the 42.4mm zinc clamp; for box section or a wall, use the flat-back clamp. Check the glass is 8mm or 10mm. Choose zinc when the clamps will be coated to match painted steel. If you want a bare metal finish, or the rail is outdoors and you will not coat it, choose 316 stainless instead.

Fitting and care

Coat the clamps before fitting; keep coating out of the glass slot and screw threads, or remove it there, so the rubbers seat properly. Mark the clamp heights on every post with a level line, drill the post and fix the back half, then fit the rubber pads for your glass. Set the glass on packers, offer up the front half and tighten the two countersunk screws evenly until the glass is gripped firmly, without overtightening. Use toughened safety glass only. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one clamp?

Yes. The price is for one complete clamp with both halves, two screws and the rubber pads. The minimum order is 8, which holds two panels.

Can I use it outdoors?

Only once it is coated. Raw zinc dulls and forms a white bloom in rain and damp air. Powder coat it for outdoor use, or choose the 316 stainless square clamp, which needs no coating.

Is it already painted?

No. It comes raw, in a matt grey cast finish, ready for powder coating or painting to the colour you want.

Does it need a hole in the glass?

No. This clamp grips the glass edge between rubber pads. There is no safety pin, so the glass needs no hole.

Will it fit a 42.4mm post?

No. The back is curved for 48.3mm. Use the zinc square clamp for 42.4mm posts so it sits tight.
