Description

This D type clamp holds a glass panel up to 12mm thick to the side of a 42.4mm round steel post, ready for you to powder coat to match your posts and handrail. It is cast zinc alloy in a raw, uncoated finish, 63 x 45 x 29mm, with a back curved to suit 42.4mm tube, rubber pads for 8mm, 10mm and 12mm glass and an optional safety pin. Two countersunk screws close the two halves round the glass edge. The price shown is for one clamp, with a minimum order of 8, enough for two panels.

Why use this clamp

Made to be coated. The raw zinc body takes powder coat or paint well, so the clamps can go through the same coating run as your steel posts and rails and finish in exactly the same colour: black, anthracite, white or any RAL shade. That is far neater than stainless clamps on painted steel.

Takes 12mm glass. The full-size D body grips 8mm, 10mm or 12mm toughened glass with the matching rubbers, so it suits wider panels and busier stairs.

Shaped to the post. The back is curved to 42.4mm, so the clamp sits tight on the tube with no rocking. A clamp made for the post size is what keeps the glass straight from post to post.

Safety pin option. The pin sits inside the clamp and passes through a hole in the glass, so the panel cannot slide out even if a screw works loose. Use it where the glass is drilled for it, or leave it out.

Where it is used

Painted or powder-coated steel balustrades on stairs, landings and mezzanine floors in cafés, shops, offices, workshops and homes; glass infill panels in coloured handrails; and glass screens between round steel posts.

How many do you need?

Most panels are held by four clamps, two on each post, set about 150 to 200mm in from the top and bottom of the glass. A run of three panels between four posts takes 12. A tall or wide panel may need a third clamp each side; follow your glass supplier's or designer's layout.

Choosing the right option

Measure across the post: 42.4mm tube is often sold as 1 1/4" nominal bore. If it measures 48.3mm, use the 48.3mm zinc D clamp; for box section or a wall, use the flat-back clamp. Fit the rubbers to match your glass: 8mm, 10mm or 12mm. If you want the safety pin, order the glass with holes drilled before toughening. Choose zinc when the clamps will be coated to match painted steel; choose 316 stainless for a bare metal finish or an uncoated rail outdoors.

Fitting and care

Coat the clamps before fitting; keep coating out of the glass slot and screw threads, or remove it there, so the rubbers seat properly. Mark the clamp heights on every post with a level line, drill and tap the post, fix the back half, then fit the rubber pads for your glass. Set the glass on packers, fit the pin if used, offer up the front half and tighten the two countersunk screws evenly until the glass is gripped firmly, without overtightening. Use toughened safety glass only. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one clamp?

Yes. The price is for one complete clamp with both halves, two screws, the rubber pads and the safety pin. The minimum order is 8, which holds two panels.

Can I use it outdoors?

Only once it is coated. Raw zinc dulls and forms a white bloom in rain and damp air. Powder coat it for outdoor use, or choose the 316 stainless D clamp, which needs no coating.

Is it already painted?

No. It comes raw, in a matt grey cast finish, ready for powder coating or painting to the colour you want.

Is the safety pin included?

Yes. It is optional: use it only if your glass has a hole drilled for it, made before the glass is toughened.

Will it fit a 48.3mm post?

No. The back is curved for 42.4mm. Use the zinc D clamp for 48.3mm posts so it sits tight.
