Description

A plain bar picket looks like a fence. A picket with a forged centre looks like ironwork. This picket is 12mm square mild steel bar, 1000mm long, with lightly hammered edges along its whole length and a forged centre halfway up: four stacked collars about 100mm long, 35mm across at the widest. Set a row of them side by side and the centres line up into a band of detail along the railing or gate. The price shown is for one picket, with a minimum order of 10, which fills about a metre of railing.

Why choose this picket

Forged, not cast on. The centre is forged into the bar itself, so there is no collar to come loose and no joint to rust behind. It is one piece of steel from end to end.

Hammered edges. The edges are hammered all the way along, which breaks up the hard machined look of plain square bar and gives the hand-made finish that suits period houses and cottage gardens.

A standard 12mm square. 12 x 12mm bar is a common size for domestic railings and gates. It welds easily to flat bar rails, and it fits rail holes punched or drilled for 12mm square, with a little clearance.

Raw steel, ready for your finish. The picket comes as bare mild steel, so you can weld it first and then prime and paint it, or send the finished panel for galvanising and powder coating.

Where it is used

Front garden railings on dwarf walls, pedestrian and side gates, driveway gate infills, balcony and landing balustrades, steps to a front door, and replacement pickets for older railings that are missing a few bars.

How many do you need?

Divide the length of the run by the spacing you want between picket centres and round up. Most railings and gates use 100mm to 120mm centres.

Run length At 110mm centres
1 metre gate 10 pickets
2 metres of railing 19 pickets
3 metres of railing 28 pickets
5 metres of railing 46 pickets

On stairs, landings and balconies in homes, the gap between pickets must not let a 100mm sphere pass through. With 12mm bar, keep centres at 110mm or less.

Is this the right picket?

You want Choose
A forged centre on hammered 12mm bar This picket
A different forged centre style in 12mm bar 12mm hammered picket with a single bulb centre or 12mm hammered picket with a longer ringed centre
A twisted basket instead of a forged centre 12mm hammered picket with single basket
Flat bar for the top and bottom rails 30 x 8mm hammered edge bar, 3m

Fitting and care

Mark the centre height on each picket before you start so the forged centres line up across the run. Tack each picket to the bottom rail, check it is plumb, then tack the top rail and weld out. Cut the ends to length if the run needs shorter pickets, keeping the centre at the same height on every one.

Clean off mill scale and weld spatter with a flap disc, degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life on a front railing. Touch up chips each spring.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one picket?

Yes, it is for one picket, with a minimum order of 10. For a larger run, call us for a quantity price.

Is it painted?

No. It is raw mild steel and will rust if left bare outdoors, so prime and paint it, or galvanise it, once it is fitted.

Can I cut it shorter?

Yes. Cut from one or both ends with a grinder or saw. Cut equally from both ends if you want the forged centre to stay in the middle.

Is the centre exactly halfway?

It is forged close to halfway along. Measure each picket and set the centres to a line before welding, as hand-forged parts vary slightly.

Will it pass through holes in a punched rail?

The plain bar will, in rail holes made for 12mm square. The forged centre is 35mm across and will not pass through, so thread the top rail down over the top half and the bottom rail up over the bottom half.
