Description
A two-rail ball stanchion that bolts to the side of an edge, not the top. The flat palm at the foot fixes to the vertical face of a concrete slab, loading dock, retaining wall or platform, so the post takes up none of the walkway. Two 75mm forged balls, 550mm apart, are drilled through for 42.4mm (32NB) tube and lock the rails with M8 grub screws. Hot-dip galvanised for outdoor use. The price shown is for one standard.

Why choose this standard
Keeps the walkway clear. Side fixing puts the post outside the edge, so the full width of a dock, ramp or platform stays usable.
Fixes where there is no room on top. Ideal for narrow walls, kerbs and slab edges too thin for a base plate.
Galvanised all over. Hot-dip galvanised mild steel stands up to rain and road salt with no painting.
Simple to build. Slide the tube rails through the balls, tighten the grub screws, and the run is done. No cutting fittings or welding on site.
Where it is used
Edge protection on loading docks and raised yards, culvert and bridge headwalls, retaining walls, plant platforms, pump stations, water treatment tanks, car park ramps and the edges of stepped walkways.

Setting the rail height
The top rail sits 1200mm above the bottom of the palm and the knee rail 650mm above it. Decide where the palm will sit on the face of the edge, then check the top rail height above the walking surface against the guarding height your project needs before you drill.
How many do you need?
Allow one standard at each end and corner, with intermediate standards at no more than 2m centres. Each rail run needs two lengths of 42.4mm tube.
| Straight run | Standards | Tube (2 rails) |
|---|---|---|
| 4m | 3 | 8m |
| 6m | 4 | 12m |
| 10m | 6 | 20m |
| 20m | 11 | 40m |
Fitting
Mark the end standards on the face of the edge, keeping the fixings a safe distance from the corner of the concrete. Fix the ends first with two through bolts or heavy-duty anchors per palm, string a line between them and fix the rest to it. Feed the tube through the balls, leave a short overhang at each end, and tighten the M8 grub screws. Finish open tube ends with 42.4mm end caps.
Care
Galvanising needs no painting. Check the grub screws and fixings once a year, and treat any cut tube ends or damaged areas with a zinc-rich paint.

Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one standard?
Yes, one galvanised side palm ball standard.
What tube does it take?
42.4mm outside diameter tube, sold as 32NB or 1 1/4 inch nominal bore.
What is the difference between a side palm and a flat base?
A side palm bolts to the vertical face of an edge. A flat base bolts down onto the top surface. Use a side palm where the top is too narrow or the walkway must stay clear.
Are fixings included?
No. Choose bolts or anchors to suit the concrete, steel or masonry you are fixing to.
