Description
The yellow straight joint joins two lengths of 33.7mm tube end to end, so a yellow safety rail can run longer than one tube. It is a short cast sleeve: one tube end pushes in from each side until they meet in the middle, and each is locked by its own brass-coated grub screw. There is no welding, threading or drilling, and the joint can be placed anywhere along the rail. It is malleable cast iron finished in gloss traffic yellow powder coat, RAL 1023, made for indoor safety rails in warehouses, factories and plant rooms. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 5.

Why use a straight joint
Rails longer than one tube. Tube comes in fixed lengths. The straight joint carries the rail on in a straight line wherever two lengths meet, so a barrier can run the full length of a walkway or machine guard.
Joints where you want them. A long tee can only join rails on top of a post. The straight joint works between posts, so you can use up offcuts and set out posts to suit the floor, not the tube lengths.
Seen from across the floor. Traffic yellow matches yellow tube and the other yellow key clamps, so the whole rail stands out to pedestrians and forklift drivers.
No hot work. Everything goes together with a hex key, with no welding, sparks or fire permit in a working building.
Where it is used
Long top and mid rails of yellow pedestrian barriers along warehouse walkways, guard rails round machinery, battery charging and plant areas, mezzanine and platform edge rails, and yellow tube frames that need a longer member than one tube.

Know its limits
The straight joint lines up and holds two tubes, but it is not recommended as a structural joint. Place joints close to a post, within about a quarter of the span, rather than mid-way between posts, and where a rail must carry a set load, join lengths over a post with a yellow 33.7mm long tee.
Which yellow 33.7mm fitting goes where
| Joint | Yellow 33.7mm fitting |
|---|---|
| Two tubes end to end between posts | This straight joint |
| Two rail lengths joined over a post | Long tee |
| Top rail over an intermediate post | Short tee |
| Top rail at an end post | 90° elbow |
| Rail end to a wall | Wall flange |
| Post to the floor | Oval base flange |
| Yellow tube | 33.7mm tube, 3.5m |
How many do you need?
One for every point where two lengths of rail meet between posts. With 3.5 metre tube, a 10 metre rail needs two joints in each rail; a two-rail barrier of that length needs four.
Choosing the right size
Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 33.7mm tube is often sold as 1" or 25mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this joint will not grip 32mm or 42.4mm tube, and both tubes must be the same size. Other sizes and finishes:
- Yellow 42.4mm straight joint for standard handrails
- Yellow 48.3mm straight joint for scaffold-size tube
- Galvanised 33.7mm sleeve joint for outdoor rails
Indoors or outdoors?
Powder coat looks best and lasts longest indoors. The brass-coated grub screws are there for their finished look and will rust outside. If you fit the joint outdoors, paint the threaded holes and screws with matching RAL 1023 yellow once tightened, or choose the galvanised version.
Fitting and care
Cut both tube ends square and deburr them. Push one tube into each end of the joint until the ends meet in the middle, line the rail up straight and tighten both grub screws firmly with a 1/4" hex key. Check the screws after the first week and once a year, and touch up chips with RAL 1023 paint.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one fitting?
Yes. The price is for one straight joint with both grub screws. The minimum order is 5.
Can it join two different tube sizes?
No. Both tubes must be 33.7mm outside diameter.
Can I put the joint mid-way between posts?
It is better close to a post. The joint is not a structural splice, so keep it near a support, or join over a post with a long tee.
Is a load rating published?
No load rating is published. For a barrier that must meet a set load, ask a structural engineer to check the design.
