Key Clamp Adjustable Short Tee 30-60° for 33.7mm Tube, Stair Rail Fitting, Galvanised

The adjustable short tee puts a sloping handrail on top of a vertical post, at whatever pitch your stairs are. The rail passes straight through a short barrel that pivots on the post socket below, so it can be set anywhere between 30° and 60° before you lock it. Two grub screws hold the rail and the post. There is no welding, threading or drilling. It suits 33.7mm outside diameter tube, and is malleable cast iron with a galvanised finish for outdoor use. The price shown is for one fitting, with a minimum order of 10.

Why use an adjustable short tee

Fits the stair you have. Real stairs are rarely an exact angle. Set the tee on site to match the line of the nosings, rather than buying fixed fittings and hoping.

The rail runs through. The sloping rail passes straight through each tee, so one length of tube carries over several posts with no cut joints.

Posts stay vertical. The posts go straight up and down, which is stronger and neater than leaning them with the rail.

No hot work. Everything goes together with a hex key, with no welding on the stair.

Handrails and guard rails on external steel stairs, concrete steps and fire escapes, sloping rails on banks and embankments, steep access ladders and platforms, and stepped seating and terracing.

How many do you need?

One adjustable short tee per post on the sloping part of the rail. Most stair rails have posts about every 1.5 to 2 metres along the slope, plus one at the top and bottom.

End posts often take an elbow or acute elbow where the rail stops or turns level.

Choosing the right size

Key clamps are sized by the tube's outside diameter. 33.7mm tube is often sold as 1" or 25mm nominal bore. Measure across the tube: this tee will not grip 26.9mm or 42.4mm tube. The same tee is made for 42.4mm and 48.3mm tube.

Tubes cannot be joined inside the barrel. For handrails on stairs in buildings, check the rail height and spacing needed under the Building Regulations before you set out.

Fitting and care

Fix the posts plumb first. Put a tee on each post, lay the rail through all the barrels, and let the barrels turn to the rail's slope. Check the rail height along the stair, then tighten each grub screw firmly with a 1/4" hex key. Check the screws after the first week and once a year after that. Touch up scratched galvanising with zinc-rich paint.
