How the Ribbed Carpet Does the Work

Each rib gives a sole something to scrape against as it passes, and the channels between the ribs give dirt somewhere to sit below the walking surface. That is why a ribbed runner keeps looking tidy between cleans.

Length matters as much as the ribs. A shoe only gets cleaner while it is on the mat, so one step on a short doormat does far less than several steps on a runner. Choosing the Right Option

Start with width. Measure the walking route, not the room. A 0.7m runner suits one person at a time, 0.9m and 1m give comfortable room on a busy staff route, and 1.2m lets two people pass without stepping off the edge.

Then decide length. If the mat only has to catch people at a door, 0.7m x 1.8m or 0.7m x 3m does that job. If dirt is being carried down a corridor, go to 0.9m x 5m. For a long aisle or a full corridor, the 10m sizes save you from butting shorter pieces together, and a joint is one more edge for someone to catch a foot on.

Keep the mat clear of doors that swing over it, and check the door has room to clear the height of the mat before you order.

Fitting and Care

Sweep and dry the floor first, then roll the runner out along the route and give it time to relax flat. Check both ends are lying flat before people walk on it.
