Description
A seated winged lion in cast steel, the right-hand half of a facing pair for driveway gates and piers. This badge is 280mm tall and 170mm wide: a lion sitting upright in profile, with a smooth head and short snout, one tall feathered wing raised behind it and a long tail curling up in an S. This is the right-hand version, which faces left, so on the right-hand gate it looks in towards the centre. It is a heavy casting of about 1.9 kg with a hollow back, about 16mm deep. The price shown is for one right-hand lion; the matching left-hand lion is sold separately.

Fitting and care
Fit the right-hand lion on the right-hand gate or pier and the left-hand lion on the left, so they face each other across the opening. Clamp each one in place at the same height, check it is upright, tack it, check again, then weld out. It is heavy, so use a full weld or studs rather than adhesive.
Degrease, then prime with a zinc-rich or metal primer before painting. Black with a gold wing makes a dramatic finish. Hot-dip galvanising before powder coating gives the longest life outdoors.

Which way does it face?
This right-hand version faces left. The left-hand version faces right. Each is cast that way, so they cannot be turned round.
Is it painted?
No. It is raw cast steel and will rust if left bare outdoors, so prime and paint it, or galvanise it, once it is fixed.
Is it solid?
No. The back is hollow with a flat edge, which keeps the weight down to about 1.9 kg.
Are all the lions exactly the same?
They are cast from the same pattern, but cast parts vary by a millimetre or two and the surface texture varies slightly from one casting to the next.
