Wine Red PVC Handrail Capping 40mm x 8mm, 25m Coil for Steel Flat Bar

A deep wine red handrail with a classic, traditional feel. This deep wine red PVC capping is made for 40mm x 8mm steel flat bar. Warm it, hook it over the top rail and press it down: the curled rims grip under both edges of the bar and the capping shrinks tight as it cools. You get one continuous 25 metre coil, enough for long runs of railing with no joins. The surface resists scratches, stains and knocks, and the colour does not fade. The price shown is for one 25m coil, which works out at about £25.24 a metre including VAT.

Why cap a flat bar handrail

Comfortable to hold. A domed PVC top is warmer and kinder to the hand than bare steel, which is cold in winter and hot in summer sun.

Rich and traditional. Wine red is a deep burgundy that looks at home on period buildings, churches and traditional shopfronts, and contrasts clearly with pale stone and render. It keeps its colour outdoors.

No more painting the top rail. The capping covers the part of a railing that wears and chips most, and wipes clean.

One piece, no joins. A full 25m coil lets you cap long ramps and multi-flight stairs in one run, round bends included.

Choosing the right size and colour

Match the capping to the width of your flat bar. This coil is for 40mm bar. Wine Red capping also comes for 50mm x 8mm flat bar.

The 40mm x 8mm size is made in 15 colours: black, white, grey, anthracite grey, white aluminium, blue, sapphire blue, red, wine red (this coil), green, gold, brown, light oak, rustic oak and macore. See them all in handrail capping.

Fitting

Clean the flat bar and remove sharp burrs and weld spatter from the edges. Uncoil the capping and warm it to about 75°C with a hot air gun; for short lengths, hot water also works. Starting at one end, open the rims, hook the capping over the bar and press it down by hand, warming a short way ahead as you go. On bends, warm the capping longer and stretch it slightly on the outside of the bend so the inside does not wrinkle; hold it with masking tape until it cools. Joints and end caps are welded with a hot welding blade: press the cut ends to the blade until they melt, push them together for at least ten seconds, let the seam cool, then trim and file it smooth. In cold weather, keep the coil indoors overnight before fitting.

Care

Wipe with warm soapy water. Do not use solvent cleaners or thinners, as they soften PVC. Check the ends and joints once a year on busy stairs.
