Description
A compact weld-on drop bolt that holds a steel gate shut at the ground. The zinc-plated back plate, 204mm long and 30mm wide, welds upright to the closing stile of the gate. A solid 16mm round bolt slides in two guides and drops 40mm below the plate into a ground socket or a hole in the drive, so the gate cannot be pushed open or blown about. Lift the bolt and turn its 90mm handle over the top lip to hold it up while the gate swings. Suits gate profiles 30mm wide or more. The price is for one drop bolt, minimum order 5.

Why choose this drop bolt
Solid 16mm bolt. A thick round bar does not bend when a wind-loaded driveway gate leans on it, unlike lighter 12mm bolts.
Holds itself up. Turn the handle over the lip at the top of the plate and the bolt stays lifted while you open the gate. Turn it back and it drops by its own weight.
Weld-on fixing. The flat back plate welds straight to a steel stile with no holes to drill and no screws to work loose.
Compact size. The 200mm plate fits low or short stiles and drops 40mm, enough for a hole in a patio slab or a shallow ground socket. Choose 250mm or 300mm for a deeper drop.
Where it is used
The fixed leaf of double driveway gates, field and yard gates, car park and compound gates, and any steel gate that needs holding open or shut at the ground.

Fitting
Close the gate in its shut position and mark where the bolt meets the ground. Stand the drop bolt upright against the face of the closing stile, with the bottom of the plate 10 to 20mm above the ground so the bolt clears uneven paving when lifted. Grind the zinc off the back of the plate and the stile where the welds go, then weld down both long edges. Drill or core a hole in the drive or set a ground socket under the bolt, check it drops freely, and paint the welds with zinc-rich primer. Fit a second socket where the gate stands open if you want to hold it open as well.
Care
A drop of oil in the guides each year keeps the bolt sliding freely. Keep the ground socket clear of grit and leaves.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one drop bolt?
Yes, one complete drop bolt, with a minimum order of 5.
How far does the bolt drop?
40mm below the bottom of the back plate. Set the plate a little above the ground and drill the socket deep enough to take the rest.
Can I bolt it on instead of welding?
The plate has no holes. It is made to weld to steel. For timber gates choose a screw-on pad bolt or a drop bolt that runs through screw-on eyes.
Will it hold the bolt up while I open the gate?
Yes. Lift the handle and turn it over the top lip of the plate and the bolt stays up.
Does it come with a ground socket?
No. Drill a hole in concrete or paving, or set a short length of tube into the ground for the bolt to drop into.
