Description
A 16mm x 500mm plain top drop bolt for making up your own gate bolt. A solid plain steel round bar with its top bent over into a handle. Run it through two 16mm drop bolt eyes welded to the closing stile of the gate and it drops into a hole in the ground to hold the gate shut or open. Lift it and rest it on a drop bolt hook to keep it up. Plain steel, ready to paint or galvanise with the gate. The price is for one bolt, minimum order 5.

Why choose this drop bolt
Made to build in. Gate makers weld the eyes where they suit the gate, so the bolt sits tight to the stile with nothing to cut off or work loose.
16mm bar. Heavy 16mm bar for driveway, yard and field gates, stiff enough not to bend when a heavy gate leans on it.
Finish to match. Bare steel takes paint, powder coat or hot-dip galvanising with the rest of the gate, so the bolt matches exactly.
Where it is used
New and repaired steel gates: driveway and garden gates, the fixed leaf of double gates, field and yard gates, and railings gates made up by fabricators and blacksmiths.

Fitting
Close the gate and stand the bolt against the closing stile with its foot on the ground. Weld the first eye guide about 50mm above the bottom rail and the second one 250 to 300mm higher, both lined up so the bolt slides freely. Weld the hook just under the handle position so the bolt can be lifted and rested on it. Mark where the bolt meets the ground and drill or core a hole about 60mm deep. Clean the welds, then paint or galvanise the gate and the bolt together.
Care
Touch up chips in the paint each spring so the bare steel does not rust, and keep the ground hole clear of grit.
Frequently asked questions
Is the price for one bolt?
Yes, one loose 500mm bolt, with a minimum order of 5. The eyes and hook are sold separately.
Is it galvanised?
No. It is plain steel so it can be finished with the gate. Paint it, powder coat it or have it hot-dip galvanised.
Can I cut it shorter?
Yes. Cut the bottom end to length and round off the edge with a file or grinder.
Which eyes fit it?
Use 16mm drop bolt eyes, two per bolt, welded to the gate.
