Description

A short bumper only protects the height it covers. Trailer beds vary, and a trailer rises and drops as it is loaded, so a contact point that suits one vehicle can miss the next. This long laminated dock bumper gives you 600mm of rubber to work with. It measures 600 x 380 x 105mm overall, weighs 28kg and is built from layers of conveyor belt held between two steel brackets, with four fixing holes ready for your anchors. It suits busy loading bays, warehouse doors and goods-in docks that see a mix of vehicles.

Why a long laminated bumper works

More rubber where the vehicle lands. Fitted upright, the 600mm length covers twice the height of a 300mm bumper. That gives a better chance of the trailer meeting rubber and not your wall, whichever vehicle backs in.

The plies take the knock on edge. The block is a stack of conveyor belt layers standing on edge, with those edges facing the vehicle. Conveyor belt is rubber reinforced with textile fabric, so each layer is tough in its own right, and the stack can take a lot of force without being damaged.

Two steel brackets hold it all together. Three bolts pass through the stack and hold it in a steel frame with a bracket on each side. Each bracket has a foot about 65mm wide with two fixing holes, so you fix through the steel and not through the rubber. Your wall fixings sit either side of the 250mm block, clear of the rubber that the vehicle touches.

It stands 105mm off the wall. That stand-off sets how far a trailer stops from your dock face, and it gives the rubber room to do its job before anything reaches the concrete or the leveller.

Replacement is simple. A worn bumper comes off at its four fixings and a new one goes on in the same holes. That is a far smaller job than repairing a broken dock edge or a bent leveller frame.

Where it is used

You will find bumpers like this on warehouse and distribution centre loading docks, at supermarket and cold store goods-in doors, on manufacturing dispatch bays and in parcel depots. It suits sites that take artics and rigid lorries at the same door, where bed heights differ. If you have limited wall beside the leveller, or trailers that rub up and down hard during loading, look at the options below.

Is this the right bumper?

Your situation Choose
A busy door that takes a mix of vehicles This 600 x 380 x 105mm bumper
A single door with limited wall, or a tighter budget 300 x 380 x 105mm laminated bumper
The longest laminated option 900 x 400 x 105mm laminated bumper
A busy HGV bay where trailers rub up and down 750 x 250 x 115mm bumper with a low friction face
Several doors, or spares to hold on site Call us and we will go through the quantities

Measure before you order. You need 380 x 600mm of clear, sound surface, because both feet sit flat on the wall. Check that the 105mm stand-off matches any other bumpers on the same dock, because the one that stands furthest out takes the contact first.

Fitting and care

Most docks use one bumper each side of the opening, set at trailer bed height. Mark out from the dimension drawing in the gallery, then offer the bumper up and check its four holes against your marks before you drill. Choose anchors to suit the holes of about 20mm and fix into sound concrete or structure. Have a competent installer confirm that the wall and anchors suit the loads at your dock, because a bumper can only pass on what its fixing point can take. At 28kg, plan on two people to lift and hold it while you fix it.

Check the rubber, bolts and fixings during your routine dock inspections, and replace the bumper once the plies are badly torn or worn. A dock bumper protects the building and vehicle from routine contact. It is not a vehicle restraint and does not replace wheel chocks or a banksman.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price for one bumper or a pair?

The price shown is for one bumper. Most doors use one each side, so add a quantity of 2 if you are protecting both sides of a bay.

Are fixings included?

The steel brackets and the three clamping bolts are part of the bumper. Wall anchors are not listed as part of this item, because the right ones depend on what you are fixing to. Call us if you want to talk it through before you order.

Does it fit upright or on its side?

Most docks fit it upright for the extra height. The four holes are in the two long feet, so it can be fixed either way round. Check the holes against your wall before you drill.

Is it solid rubber?

No, and that is the point of this design. It is built from layers of conveyor belt, which is rubber reinforced with textile fabric. The textile edges can look frayed as the bumper wears. That is normal for this type of bumper.
