Description
Premium Butyl Rubber Sheet – Sold Per Linear Metre
Our Butyl Rubber Sheet is a fully vulcanised, high-performance elastomer sheeting used across industries where reliable sealing, chemical resistance, and long-term weathering performance are essential. Available in five thicknesses from 1.0mm to 10mm, all cut to order at 1400mm width and priced per linear metre.
Butyl rubber (Isobutylene-Isoprene Rubber / IIR) is the material of choice when you need near-zero gas permeability — making it the industry standard for pond liners, air and gas barriers, pharmaceutical stoppers, HVAC ductwork seals, and roofing membranes. Unlike EPDM, SBR, or neoprene, vulcanised butyl rubber will not degrade in ozone-rich environments, maintaining its integrity for decades.

Key Performance Properties
- Outstanding Gas & Air Impermeability — Butyl rubber has the lowest gas permeability of any commercial elastomer, making it the only correct choice for inflatable seals, air bladders, and gas-tight membranes
- Excellent Ozone & UV Resistance — Will not crack, harden, or degrade on exposure to sunlight, ozone, or outdoor weathering. Suitable for permanent exterior applications
- Superior Weathering Resistance — Outperforms SBR and nitrile in outdoor environments over 10–20+ year lifespans
- Good Abrasion Resistance — Suitable for protective matting, gasketing, and wear-resistant sealing applications
- Wide Temperature Range — Remains flexible and functional from -40°C to +120°C
- Non-Toxic & Chemically Inert — Safe for use in water containment, fish ponds, potable water systems, and food-adjacent applications
- Chemical Resistance — Resists dilute acids, alkalis, ketones, and many polar solvents. Not suitable for petroleum-based oils or fuels
- Fully Vulcanised — Unlike adhesive-bonded alternatives, vulcanised butyl sheet will not delaminate or fail at joints under stress
Common Applications
- Pond & Water Feature Liners — The preferred material for high-quality garden ponds and water features due to its non-toxicity, flexibility, and 20+ year outdoor lifespan
- Roofing Membranes — Flat roof waterproofing and EPDM roof replacement
- HVAC & Ductwork Sealing — Air-tight gaskets and duct seals where low permeability is critical
- Industrial Gaskets & Seals — Steam, water, and dilute chemical service
- Vibration Damping & Anti-Vibration Pads — Machinery mounts, pump bases
- Agricultural & Horticultural Liners — Reservoirs, irrigation channels, and containment bunds
- Pharmaceutical & Laboratory — Stoppers, septa, and closure liners
- Electrical Insulation — Low and medium voltage cable insulation wrapping
Butyl vs EPDM — Which Should You Choose?
This is the most common question we receive. Both are excellent outdoor rubbers, but they differ in key ways:
- Gas permeability: Butyl is dramatically lower — critical for air-tight and gas-tight applications
- Toxicity: Vulcanised butyl is fully non-toxic and safe for fish ponds and potable water. Some EPDM compounds include processing oils that may be fish-toxic
- Flexibility at low temperatures: Both perform down to -40°C, butyl edges ahead in very cold climates
- Oil resistance: Neither is suitable for petroleum oils — use nitrile for oil-contact applications
- Cost: Butyl is typically priced higher than EPDM, but the performance and longevity justify it for critical applications
For pond liners, air barriers, and pharmaceutical sealing: choose Butyl. For general outdoor matting and roofing where cost matters: EPDM is a valid alternative.
Ordering Guide
Select your required thickness from the variant dropdown. All sheets are cut to 1400mm wide and the quantity you order equals the number of linear metres. For example, ordering quantity 3 gives you a sheet 1400mm × 3000mm.
