Professional Installation Guide
- Ground Preparation: Remove debris, stones, and sharp objects. Level surface using rake or levelling board. Fill any depressions or holes with topsoil. Ensure good drainage – standing water will prevent grass growth.
- Soil Condition: Ideal installation on established grass or freshly seeded area. Soil should be firm but not compacted. If installing on bare soil, seed or turf after mesh installation.
- Roll Out Mesh: Unroll mesh across prepared area. For multiple rolls, overlap edges by 50-100mm to prevent gaps. Ensure mesh lies flat without wrinkles or folds.
- Secure with U-Pins: Insert U-pins every 500mm along edges and joins. Use 100 pins per 60m² roll minimum. On slopes or high-traffic areas, increase pin density to every 300mm.
- Grass Establishment: If installing over existing grass, allow 4-6 weeks for roots to grow through mesh before heavy use. If seeding, apply grass seed at 35-50g/m², water regularly, and allow 8-10 weeks establishment before vehicle traffic.
- Top Dressing (Optional): Apply 10-15mm layer of sandy loam topsoil over mesh to accelerate grass growth and improve appearance. Brush into mesh apertures.
- Initial Maintenance: Keep area well-watered during establishment period. Mow when grass reaches 75-100mm height. Avoid heavy traffic until grass is fully established through mesh.

Performance & Durability
Load Distribution: 25mm x 25mm grid distributes vehicle weight across 625mm² per aperture, preventing point-load soil compaction and rutting.
UV Resistance: UV-stabilised HDPE formulation tested to 10+ years outdoor exposure without brittleness, cracking, or degradation per ISO 4892 accelerated weathering.
Frost Resistance: Maintains flexibility and strength from -40°C to +80°C – no brittleness in winter, no softening in summer.
Root Integration: Grass roots intertwine through mesh within 4-6 weeks, creating composite structure with 300%+ increased load-bearing capacity vs unprotected grass.
Drainage Performance: 100% permeable structure maintains natural drainage rates – prevents waterlogging and surface water pooling.
Maintenance & Longevity
Mowing: Mow as normal once grass is established. Mesh sits 5-10mm below grass height and won't damage mower blades. Rotary or cylinder mowers both suitable.
Fertilising: Apply standard lawn fertiliser as normal. Mesh doesn't inhibit nutrient uptake. Water-soluble fertilisers wash through mesh to roots.
Weed Control: Apply selective herbicides as normal. Mesh is chemically inert and won't be damaged by lawn treatments.
Aeration: Hollow-tine aeration can be performed through mesh. Avoid solid-tine aeration which may damage mesh structure.
Expected Lifespan: 10-15 years in typical car park or pathway use. 15-20 years in light-traffic applications. UV warranty covers 10 years minimum.
Repairs: Damaged sections can be cut out and replaced. Overlap new mesh by 100mm and secure with additional U-pins.
Why Choose Our Grass Reinforcement Mesh?
- UK-Proven Performance: Over 50,000m² installed across UK car parks, golf courses, and event spaces with zero rutting reported
- Premium HDPE Material: Unlike cheaper polypropylene alternatives, our HDPE mesh maintains strength and flexibility for 10+ years
- Optimal Grid Size: 25mm aperture is ideal for UK grass species – smaller grids restrict growth, larger grids reduce load distribution
- Professional Thickness: 4mm thickness (650g/m²) provides strength without excessive weight – lighter meshes fail under traffic
- Easy Handling: 39kg roll weight allows one-person installation – heavier rolls require machinery
- Cost-Effective Solution: Professional results at competitive pricing compared to plastic grid systems or concrete/paving alternatives
Environmental Benefits
Sustainable Drainage: Maintains natural water infiltration and drainage – reduces surface water runoff and flooding risk compared to impermeable surfaces.
Carbon Sequestration: Protected grass continues photosynthesis and carbon capture – 60m² of grass sequesters approximately 30kg CO₂ annually.
Biodiversity Support: Grass surface supports insects, worms, and soil microorganisms – unlike concrete or tarmac which create ecological dead zones.
Heat Island Reduction: Grass surface remains 10-15°C cooler than tarmac in summer – reduces urban heat island effect.
Recyclable Material: HDPE is fully recyclable at end of life – can be reprocessed into new plastic products.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will this support cars and vans?
- Yes, with a 2.5 tonne load capacity per metre, the mesh easily supports cars (1.2-1.8 tonnes), vans (2-2.5 tonnes), golf buggies, and light commercial vehicles. Not suitable for HGVs or heavy plant machinery – use heavier-duty cellular systems for those applications.
- How long does it last?
- Our UV-stabilised HDPE mesh is guaranteed for 10+ years in UK weather conditions. Typical lifespan is 10-15 years in car park use, 15-20 years in pathway or light-traffic applications. Unlike cheaper polypropylene mesh which degrades in 3-5 years, our HDPE maintains strength and flexibility.
- Can I mow over it?
- Absolutely. Once grass grows through (4-6 weeks), the mesh sits 5-10mm below grass height. You can mow as normal with rotary or cylinder mowers. The mesh won't damage blades and provides a stable surface for mowing equipment.
- Do I need the U-pins?
- Yes, we strongly recommend securing with U-pins every 500mm to prevent movement, especially on slopes or in high-traffic areas. Without pins, the mesh can shift under vehicle turning forces, creating gaps and reducing effectiveness. Budget 100 pins per 60m² roll (1 pack).
- Can I install this on a slope?
- Yes, the mesh works well on slopes up to 1:3 (18°). Increase U-pin density to every 300mm on slopes to prevent downhill creep. For steeper slopes (1:3 to 1:2), consider additional anchoring or terracing. Not recommended for slopes steeper than 1:2 (27°).
- Will grass grow through the mesh?
- Yes, grass roots naturally grow through the 25mm x 25mm apertures within 4-6 weeks. The mesh actually encourages stronger root development by providing structure. For best results, install over established grass or seed immediately after installation. Keep well-watered during establishment.
- What's the difference between green and black mesh?
- Green blends naturally with grass and is virtually invisible once established – best for visible areas like car parks and paths. Black absorbs heat to accelerate grass growth in cooler months and is less visible in muddy conditions – preferred for shaded areas or winter installations. Performance is identical.
- Can I drive on it immediately after installation?
- Light vehicle traffic (cars, vans) is possible immediately if installed over established grass, but we recommend waiting 4-6 weeks for roots to grow through mesh for maximum strength. If installed on bare soil or freshly seeded area, wait 8-10 weeks for full grass establishment before vehicle traffic.
- How do I calculate how much I need?
- Measure your area in metres (length x width = m²). Each roll covers 60m². Divide your area by 60 and round up. Add 10% for overlaps and wastage. Example: 150m² car park ÷ 60 = 2.5 rolls, round up to 3 rolls + 10% = 3 rolls required. Order 1 pack of U-pins (100 pins) per roll.
- Is this suitable for wheelchair access?
- Yes, once grass is established through the mesh, it provides a firm, stable surface suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and pushchairs. The mesh prevents rutting and maintains level surface even in wet conditions. Ensure grass is kept mown to 50-75mm height for easiest access.
