Application Guide

  1. Surface Preparation: Remove rust, scale, grease, and contaminants. Abrade existing gloss surfaces with 180-grit paper. For bare metal, apply zinc phosphate primer (e.g., Quick Dry Zinc Phosphate Primer) and allow to cure per manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Priming Requirements: Bare ferrous metals: zinc phosphate or red oxide primer. Galvanised steel: etch primer or T-Wash treatment. Timber: wood primer or undercoat. Previously painted surfaces: light abrasion only if sound.
  3. Mixing: Stir thoroughly for 2 minutes before use. Do not thin for brush/roller application. For spray: thin up to 10% with white spirit if required (test first).
  4. Brush/Roller Application: Use quality synthetic bristle brush or 6mm microfibre roller. Apply thin, even coats. Avoid overworking – allow paint to flow and self-level. Two thin coats superior to one thick coat.
  5. Spray Application: Airless spray: 0.013-0.015" tip, 1800-2200 PSI. HVLP: 1.4-1.8mm nozzle, 25-30 PSI. Conventional spray: 1.5-2.0mm nozzle, 40-50 PSI. Strain through 100-micron filter.
  6. Drying & Curing: Touch-dry in 20 minutes. Recoat after 2-4 hours. Avoid heavy use for 16 hours. Full chemical resistance after 48 hours. High humidity or low temperatures extend drying times.

Suitable Substrates (When Properly Primed)

✓ Ferrous Metals: Mild steel, cast iron, wrought iron (with zinc phosphate or red oxide primer)
✓ Non-Ferrous Metals: Aluminium, galvanised steel (with etch primer or T-Wash)
✓ Timber: Softwood, hardwood, MDF (with wood primer/undercoat)
✓ Previously Painted: Sound existing gloss or satin finishes (after keying)

Typical Applications

  • Industrial machinery, equipment housings, and control panels
  • Structural steelwork, railings, gates, and architectural metalwork
  • Agricultural equipment, trailers, and farm machinery
  • Workshop tools, benches, cabinets, and storage systems
  • Commercial shopfronts, window frames, and doors
  • Automotive restoration and custom fabrication projects
  • Marine fittings and above-waterline metalwork (with appropriate primer)
  • Joinery, timber cladding, and decorative woodwork

Coverage & Pack Size Guide

Surface Area 5L Coverage Coats Possible
25 m² 2 coats Standard finish on sealed surfaces
50 m² 1 coat Single coat on well-prepared substrates
15 m² 3 coats High-build finish or porous surfaces

Coverage varies with substrate porosity, application method, and film thickness. Porous or textured surfaces reduce coverage by 20-40%. Always purchase 10-15% extra for wastage.

Recommended Primer Systems

Substrate Recommended Primer Dry Time Before Topcoat
Bare Steel Quick Dry Zinc Phosphate Primer 2-4 hours
Galvanised Metal Etch Primer or T-Wash Treatment 4-6 hours
Aluminium Etch Primer (keyed surface) 4-6 hours
Timber Wood Primer or Aluminium Wood Primer 4-6 hours
Previously Painted None (if sound) – key surface only N/A

Performance & Compliance

Gloss Retention: Maintains 80%+ initial gloss after 12 months exterior exposure (BS 3900-D6).

Adhesion: Exceeds BS EN ISO 2409 cross-cut adhesion test (classification 0-1) when applied over compatible primers.

Corrosion Protection: When used with zinc phosphate primer, provides 500+ hours salt spray resistance (ASTM B117).

VOC Compliance: Meets EU Directive 2004/42/EC category A/d (decorative coatings, trim and cladding primers).

Storage, Handling & Safety

Storage: Store in cool, dry conditions between +5°C and +25°C. Keep container tightly sealed. Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Stir before use if stored for extended periods.

Safety: Flammable liquid and vapour. Use in well-ventilated areas. Avoid skin and eye contact. Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection). Keep away from ignition sources. Safety data sheet available on request.

Disposal: Dispose of waste in accordance with local environmental regulations. Do not pour down drains. Empty containers can be recycled after drying.

Warranty & Delivery

Performance Guarantee: 3-year exterior durability when applied over compatible primer systems to properly prepared substrates in accordance with technical guidelines.

UK Delivery: Free standard delivery on orders over £100. Next-day and timed delivery options available. Hazardous goods shipping applies (UN1263 – flammable liquid).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this paint dry so quickly?
The quick-drying formula uses fast-evaporating solvents and modified alkyd resins that cure rapidly at ambient temperatures. This allows for faster recoating and reduced project downtime compared to traditional gloss paints that can take 6-16 hours to recoat.
Can I apply this directly to bare metal without primer?
Not recommended. While the paint will adhere to clean, abraded metal, proper corrosion protection requires a compatible primer system (zinc phosphate for ferrous metals, etch primer for galvanised/aluminium). Direct application may result in premature failure and rust bleeding.
Will this paint work in cold weather?
Application is possible down to +10°C, but drying times will be significantly extended. At 10°C, expect touch-dry in 45-60 minutes and recoat time of 4-6 hours. Do not apply if frost is forecast within 24 hours or if substrate temperature is below 10°C.
How do I achieve a mirror-like finish?
Apply two thin coats rather than one thick coat. Use quality brushes/rollers and maintain a wet edge. For spray application, use proper technique with 50% overlap. Light sanding between coats (320-grit) and final coat application in dust-free environment produces best results.
Can I use this paint over old gloss paint?
Yes, if the existing coating is sound and well-adhered. Thoroughly clean and abrade with 180-grit paper to provide a key. Remove any flaking or peeling areas completely. Test adhesion on a small area first.
What's the difference between this and standard gloss paint?
This is a professional quick-dry formulation with significantly faster drying times (20 mins vs 4-6 hours), better flow and levelling, higher gloss retention, and optimized for both brush and spray application. Standard gloss paints typically require longer drying times and may not perform as well in spray applications.
How should I clean my brushes and equipment?
Clean immediately after use with white spirit or brush cleaner. For spray equipment, flush thoroughly with white spirit followed by gun wash. Dried paint requires proprietary paint remover. Dispose of cleaning materials responsibly.
