The steel channel and base plates behind it are hot dip galvanised and powder coated, and usually outlast the rubber by a long way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt protects the tyre as well as the kerb.\u003c\/strong\u003e The buffer is shaped to cover the fixing stud nearest the tyre, so a sidewall rubs on rubber, not on steel or a bolt head.
